O'Day 222 vs. O'Day 192 vs. Catalina Capri 22

I am looking to purchase one of these sailboats. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding any of these boats? I have read the owner reviews. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with one or more of them for comparison sake. My only other sailing experience has been sailing a Sunfish for a week while on vacation.Thanks,David

Love my 192, I am a former sunfish sailor, ocean sailing in Florida east coast many many years ago, 1968-1978. Also rented Ensigns at Dinner Key in Miami. The 192 has a small cabin and if you're planning any family cruising the 222 appears a bit more roomy. I am primarily day sailing. Have looked longingly at other trailerable vessels but am presently economically sailing.

222 way to go

The longer I have the 222 the more I like it.I have owned her for 3 years now and love it. The 222 offers more cabin space than the 192 and provides more of a "larger boat feel". the 222 has winches for the jib sheets versus jam cleats. Othervise the two models are very much alike. I just perfer a larger boat.The catalina is a good boat. However, I feel the 22 is a bit dated (same vintage boat as the 222 or the 192). My friend has one and he seems to spend more time fixing small things than I do. Such as leaky windows tiller pintals, plumbing fixtures, etc. otherwise the Cat sails very nicely, I just like the O'DAY

David, I purchased an '84 222 a couple months ago and I really like it. The quality is good and I like some of the features, like the furling jib. She handles great and is fun to sail. Plenty room for an overnight, which I have already done. All around a neat boat. The only downside is that she does not single hand easily. I have not even tried yet. The reason is that the jib sheet winches are mounted on the cabin top, so if you're alone it can be tough to tack. The Catalina 22's I've seen have the winches are conveniently mounted back in the cockpit area, accessible from the tiller. So, if you really want to sail alone a lot you may want to go with the Catalina. Otherwise, I love the 222. -- Steve

Capri 22 is more perfomance

If performance (overall speed and pointing)is an issue go with Capri, especially fin keel. Spartan interior, although the setteesare long. Best feature is HUGE (for 22 footer)cockpit. Good quality for the price. For daysailing/racing the Capri got the edge. If lots of weekending is planned the 222 interiorwould probably be better. Other advantage forthe Capri, Catalina is still in business

David,I purchased an 84 222 last last year and am very happy with it. A previous owner had installed a new 150 CDI furler with Harken winches back at the cockpit. I've single handed many times without difficulty. Very happy with the quality and wouldn't hesitate to purchase the same boat if I had it to do again.Michael Knight
