oday 222 swing keel pin

Hi folks

Grounded the old doll and other than minor damage to lead snub keel, I lost the pin attaching the pendant to the swing keel. The metal strips are still attached to the pendent. I have a screw with a lock nuts there now but not comfortable with the possible wear from the threads. Looked at replacing with a clevis pin but worried that if the same thing happened it would break the keel. Thinking week link.

What would be a suitable replacement?

I am noticing some side to side sway when going down wind and wondering if it should be tighter eg some pieces missing eg some kind of wedges.

Mine does the same side to side thumping not so much swaying the actual boat but noise and was going to take it apart when I bring it in for the season. I am thinking there is some wear at the Centerboard Pin or the wedges. Any one have any schematics at how that centerboard should fit?

When you remove the bolts that hold the plates, be careful that you don't break them. I used an impact screw driver, but the best thing to use is an impact cordless electric drill with a Phillips bit on it. It will give you more leverage to remove the bolts. I had two bolts that were stubborn, but I finally got them out. Soak them with WD-40. I used Never-Seize on them when I put them back.
When you get the plates off, take a fish fillet knife and use that to cut the caulking behind the wedges. A little heat on the blade of the knife will soften the caulking. A 1" metal putty knife is needed to clean out the rabbet grooves so that the fiber pin can slide down. Good luck with that.

I could probably write a book on cruising in small boats. It's always been a hobby of mine outside of the guitar. We just spent last night out on the water and it's starting to get too chilly for that right now. If the Blue fish and Striped Bass don't start coming up the river pretty soon, I'm going to call it quits for the season. Being a "Geezer", I find it hard to cope with cold weather these days don't sha know.

Yes. I read that in one of your posts. What a friggen bummer! It's the rudder blades on these boats that are prone to breaking. I just can't understand why the centerboard broke. If you run into any problems and need any info Michelle, just email me OK? sailtrinkka1986@verizon.net

Hi Joe,
it had pretty extensive de-lamination along one edge, it looked to me. I guess rocking back and forth and sailing in 20kt winds didn't help...Maybe the pin is worn, allowing too much play back and forth, etc. Finally quit!
It broke exactly along where it would be forced against the keel.

Anywhoo, I'll let you know what happens when I try to fix it.

There is a little side to side play in these centerboards but when the boat is sailing along in anything but a run, the sideways pressure on the board is enough to keep it stationary. I don't know how much play is in my board. When I'm moored or anchored, I keep the board all the way up.
You're right about the wedges. They just hold the pivot pin in place.The only way to cut down on side to side play of the board is to add a large nylon washer on each side of the fiber pivot pin. My tip up rudder came with large nylon washers which I never used.

When you remove your centerboard, check the fiber pivot pin. If it's worn replace it. Rudy Nickerson has these pins at D & R Marine, Assonet Ma. Mine was still in good condition when I checked it a few years ago.
Rudy also has a different type of stainless steel shackle for the centerboard pendant line than what came stock with your boat. This is about all you would need to be back in business. I wouldn't make any other changes to what you have now. Give Rudy a call and ask him about any concerns you may have. http://www.drmarine.com/ Probably the hardest thing you're going to encounter in pulling your board out is getting your boat in a position where you can get at the bottom of the keel. I wasn't planning on taking my boat off the trailer this year but I ran her aground twice this past summer and I'll probably need to spot paint some areas of my keel and board before it goes in the water again next season. I may even do the whole bottom again next year. So I'll probably be taking her off the trailer next week and putting her on my boat stands for the winter. Good luck!

Called it quits for the season after indian summer didn't show up.

I managed to remove CB in my yard[after much thinking] by moving the boat back a foot or so to get move clearance and jacking up the keel enough to remove the keel rollers. I braced the hull with some softwood boards wedged between the rollers and hull.

After a couple of different tries, I ended up having to remove the cross member that supported the keel rollers which required blocking up the front and rear of the hull in order to get the right angle to remove the CB.

Thought I might have to dig a hole but it slipped right out. Will weigh it when I get batteries for my scale.

The wedges are in bad shape. The screw holes for the wood screws are stripped. May refill with epoxy and redrill. One was also slightly shorter than the other. Was thinking of using an old white plastic cutting board to make new ones but not sure how they would survive constant immersion in water and of course wear. I saw on one of your post that you suggested epoxied plywood would work. Might try starboard though.

Not looking forward to putting it back in what with calking the wedges, the pin and plates in the spring but will find a way.

time to get ready for the snows.

It's a shame that you don't own any sailboat stands Tom. That job would have been a lot easier to do. Send me an email and I'll send you some pics of my set up for getting the boat off a roller trailer and a flat bunk trailer.
