O'Day 222 - Ship it or Sell it

Well, I am interested in input and advice on a difficult decision - pay out the nose to ship a mint, 1986 O'Day 222 or try to sell it. I've had this great boat for about 10 years, berthed close to home in a free slip. After a quick transfer to Houston, TX, I'm faced with the sell or spend decision. I am told it will cost about $1600 minimum to have this boat, on it's trailer shipped from New Jersey to Texas. I just don't have the time to drive to NJ and trail this back - and it would probably cost about the same on gas and lodging, not to mention wear and tear. Once in Texas, the nearest good sailing ground is 1.5-2.0 hours away, and minimum $100/month to berth it. To sell or spend, that is the question (and since you spell it "boat" the answer might be obvious...) Anyone out there have any experience with boat movers or other options, or thoughts ?

Do you know someone

I bet someone would love to sail it there for the use of the boat. Do you know someone that may want to do this that you know and trust? A retired guy/ women? r.w.landau

Bad news...

I hate to say it but the numbers point to selling her. You have to think about the use you'll get after paying all that money. For me, the boat being 1.5 to 2 hours away would drastically reduce my sailing time. It's just hard to be spontaneous when distances like that are involved. Gosh, I hope you can find someway to do it. Maybe leave her in NJ for now? Can someone watch her for awhile? Not an easy problem!

I had to make the same decision....

I just made a similar decision regarding my 1985 OD 26. Had to buy a (new) trailer and am having it shipped out to CA from VA. The advantage for me is that: 1. I LOVE the boat 2. It will be docked about 45 minutes from my home. Of note: when the boat was docked about 2 hrs. away from home on the east coast.....I didn't get to use it very much. You might want to give "Flo" a call at "Smooth Sailing Boat Transport" 559-277-4705 She can run some $$ numbers for you. Good luck with your decision!

sell it is my advice

unless you are "married" to the boat selling would be the only way to go. I bought a 222 for less then 5000 here in DFW area, wonderful shape etc. that means if you get 3400 for you boat you break even and from the seach I did most 222 are going in the 5K range. At my marina there is a 25ft Oday for 6k so you might even be able to up grade. Good luck

sell it

It seems that you want to talk more about the money than you do about the boat! When something that is supposed to be fun becomes more of an expense, let's face it, you're just looking for a reason to get rid of it.

I'm Shipping

Jim - Know how you feel. I'm having my 23 shipped from Atlanta to Melbourne, FL. Couldn't bear to be with out her. Try boattransport.com. They put your tow job out for bid. I got a really good rate. Keep it cost effective though. Sell it if you can replace it for same. Rick
