ODay 222 seizing shroud to spreader

I've been reading up on rigging info. It seems that usually the shrouds are seized to spreaders after the rig is tightened and tuned up.

How important is this on a smaller boat, with well fixed spreaders like the ODay 222?

If I pull the shrouds tight and seize them to the spreaders before the mast is up, will this be sufficient? The sockets that fix the spreaders to the mast are well fitting, and set the angle of rake pretty well.

I can't imagine going up the mast on a little boat to seize the wire in place.

I don't seize the shrouds to the shredders at all. There is a small wire that keeps the stay in place in the spreader but by no means is it there to lock it in place. This allows the shroud to slide in the wire (under the boot) while the mast is raised or lowered so that it stays in place on the spreader.

In fact even on larger boats in the 30 foot range I have never sieved the cap shroud to the spredders. On a small boat do not attempt to climb the mast in a chair or otherwise unless absolutely necessary. A 22 foot boat has a small lightweight mast that is not intended to support the weight of a person aloft like the larger vessels are. It is far easier and safer in a Oday 222 to just lower the mast for repairs.

This is exactly what I've been thinking as well. I wouldn't climb the mast on this boat at all either. I wasn't 100% sure about how to wire the shroud on.

Thanks for the input, you confirmed the same thing I was thinking, but I'm relatively new to sailing.

I know this is not an Oday but here is how it works on a Catalina 22. You can see that the wire just goes around the stay and through the Spreader but is not intended to seize the stay in place.

Drop the mast and take a photo of the spreader tip for sure. Then I can respond back as a former sailboat dealer. Under no circumstances I would go up a small mast like that which is why I would highly suggest dropping that mast for safety. Once I played stupid and the mast collapsed falling several slips over nearly killing me. No fun in the ER.

I have no intention of going up the mast. I was reading on rigging info, and noticed popular information that the shrouds Should be tuned before they are seized into place, hard to do on a little boat like this, so I wanted to ask to clarify. My mast is already down, and I'm replacing the rig before I get the boat in. I'm going to follow the previous advise and NOT seize them into place, but wire them into the spreader cap.

Thanks for the reply.

How about a photo. I was considered the largest small boat dealer in the country plus did a lot on designs. I use to work on your boat model but with age needed some refresher which a photo would help. But you have made a decision. Last boat built was in 1989 for the model year 1990

I have already removed the old standing rig from the boat. I have new rigging made up already. Im waiting on a new mast shoe to arrive, so i can cut the old screws holding the shoe into the mast, and put a new shoe in.

(there is a slight amount of play in the shoe within the mast, and i cant tighten the screws because the are corroded stuck. it shouldnt matter once the mast is up but i dont plan on taking the mast down again anytime soon) Then i'll attach the wire and run her down to the marina, with hopes that they will be able to help pick her off the trailer/keel, so i can paint the centerboard and put a new pendant line on.
