I have recently purchased an O'Day 222 (1984 Anniversary Edition) It is in excellent condition. But, as with anything related to boats, it needs regular maintenance and repair. My current need is for help in replacing the line which controls the kick up rudder which has broken. It seems simple enough, but I can't figure out how the lower end that goes through the rudder gets secured. Thanks for all assistance. jdooley44@comcast.net

O'Day 222 Rudder Blade Control Lines

I haven't looked lately, but I believe that there are a pair of shackles attached to the rudder blade --- one for the 'hold-up' line; one for the line that keeps the blade down and from floating up. The two control lines are each tied with a bowline knot to its respective shackle. The bitter ends of the control lines are fed through jamb cleats. (In order to make sure that the lines don't slip, I end them up with a couple of half-hitches around the tiller.)

O DAY 222 RUDDER CONTROLL LINE

Jack I just went tru the same thing the begining of the season. On mine there was only one line. It fed from the tillertru the rudder head. There should be a hole wher you feed the line through to tie a knot to secure it. The biggest problem I had was digging out the remains of the old line. I did not have a line to hold the rudder up only one to keep it down. By the way where on the cape are you? I am in cotuit.

kick up rudder repair

Thanks for both responses. I only have one line as well and did the repair as you mentioned, however, the knot when it got wet shrunk and the line pulled back through. I was thinking that perhaps there was some sort of stopper inside that hole in the rudder to prevent the line from coming back. maybe I'll just tie another knot. I am in Wellfleet and keep the boat on a mooring on the bayside.
