Oday 222 Halyard size, sheet size

What size are the halyard and sheets supposed to be?

I think mine is too thick, I'd like to go back to original with it .
I think it's about 7/16-1/2" on everything, which tends to run tight through the blocks and sheaves.

I understand with high tech line I could go skinny, but I don't necessarily want that either.

What's the "specs"?

For both sheets and halyards?
I was thinking of going to 3/8"
So that should be plenty then

Yes for both. 3/8 should fit through the sheaves and isn't too small that it's hard on your hands.

D&R Marine (everything O'Day) , suggests jib sheets are 3/8". That would be a good size for the main sheet also. The suggested jib halyard is 5/16". Since I have a furling jib, I use 3/8" halyard; because I winch it up hard to reduce sag.

You might go with 3/8 halyards in case you hoist someone up the mast.

Go with lo-stretch 5/16 (T-900 or equivalent) for halyards. 3/8 dacron double-braid would be good for sheets. As for hoisting anyone up the spar the T-900 is rated at 7K pounds.... !
Not a large sail plan on that model, so you could go with 1/4 for halyards just as easily. Save some $ too.

I run 1/4" Vectran for halyards on my 192. Next time I need to do halyards, I will use Dyneema cored, still 1/4" with polyester covers. Mainsheet is 3/8" New England Ropes Salsa, runs through the blocks extremely well, feels great on the hands, and holds up to UV very well. Jib sheets are 5/16" NER Salsa, a bit lighter for no wind days, and Salsa doesn't absorb a lot of water. I use 1/4" NER VPC for control lines like outhaul and reefing lines. Vang is leftover something like 5/16". It's a blend of some poly and Dyneema, I think old sheets from my former boat...

Please don't hoist anyone or yourself up the mast of a 222, or similar boat. If you were completely positive of the rigging condition and a lightweight person, with everything done smart, you could get away with it without much luck. But to imply on a forum that many newbies read that it's ok is just silly

As silly as one person saying in an unqualified way, "don't do it" is equally bad form. "Your boat, Your choice". AND, it depends on how bad you need someone up the mast.

Having dropped plenty of masts this past weekend, including an O'day 22 still in the slip, I'd rather find only 1 or 2 more guys, and I'd put that 222 mast down before I'd try to climb it. It's not a big boat. Ron20324, if you've climbed or hoisted someone up a 222 mast, I'd like to hear about it. I'd be slightly more comfy on a Dwyer mast section than a Z-Spars, as the Z-Spars are known to be less beefy than the Dwyer.
