A year ago i bought a Oday 22 in deplorable state, but by now ( after a lot of hard work) it's beginning to look real good. Hope to rig it up next year. However, i don't have the original mast. My questions: What length should the mast be? From information on this site i have calculated 27 ft. This somehow doesn't seem to fit with the information on sail dimensions. Is 196 sq ft sufficient sail area? Would a 24 ft mast that i have laying around be an option? Lots of questions, and i'll be very happy with any information i might recieve. Not many Odays around here, i found out...

go to the specs page for your boat and all dimensions are there!

mast size (I went through the same thing)

I walked through junkyards and marina's with the specs in my hand for months! Anyway, the actual mast, of the "masthead" rig, is 22' 9" long. The later rigs were "fractional" (smaller jib to main ratio), and had a taller mast... I do not know that length. The boom is 100" long. The earlier boats had an aluminum tabernacle, as mine does. If you need things like cross-section size/pin position/crosstree height and size/etc., write me, and I'll dig up my spec list. Also check this site, which still sells tabernacles and cross-trees and many other O'day rigging parts: http://www.rigrite.com/1Main/spar_M.html

Got a question for Wiebe

Wiebe, This year I bought a '79 O'day 22 of which I knew a lot of work needed to be done. What I didn't know, but I do now, was that leakage was a bigger problem than expected. Especially the cabin roof and the deck I suspect. Regarding the overall state of the boat I decided to take everything off the deck this winter and do a profound repair, also to the fiberglass were needed. Reading your story, I would like to get in touch with you and with anyone else that has experience with renovating an O'day 22 and can share information with me about this issue. My email address: lmorel@wxs.nl Thanks in advance!

thanks richard

that was exactly the information i needed most, but surely i would like to see the rest of your spec list. my boat has a aluminium tabernacle that fits nicely with the 24 ft mast that i have, so i will use this mast then. i intend to use the full length though and not cut it to size, because i have the feeling that the 22 could use a bit more sail then 196 sq ft. if there i someone out there who has any thoughts about that i'ld like to hear it.
