222 Versus 22
I have owned both a 1976 O'Day 22 and, now, a 1986 222. The 22 did not change much over the years and it did have a fixed keel. This is fine if you are equipped with a depth finder or you sail deep waters. The draft was a respectable 24", however, the 222 has a 22" draft. Either way not much difference. However,the 222 has a centerboard and that makes for convenient sailing no matter where you are. The 222 is ALOT more boat than the 22. It is newer and better laid out and feels like much, much more sailboat. I looked at quite a few 22 ft sailboats before my 222 purchase and this has the best possible layout in my opinion. She's stable, comfortable, spacious and a great daysailor. In addition, she's quite attractive as well. The 222 feels like a larger boat than 22 foot. I would definitely suggest the 222 before the 22 (but either one is a good choice). They only made about 600 or 700 222s and it will be a good challenge for you to find a great one. Since O'Days Rule ...you really can't lose. Good luck!
