O'day 22 stability

I have owned my 22 for about two months now and do most of my sailing on an in-land lake. My question is when do I need to worry about the heel of the 22. She seems stable at 20' but in heavy wind i worry about leaving her at that heel if the the wind is gusty. Every body I spoke with says not to worry until I am at 35' but they do nt own o'day. p.s. This o;day has the swing keel.

22 Healing

Well Drew since your sailing inland I wouldn't worry too much. The 22 will rarely go over on wind power alone, its when you add some good size waves on the beam to the equation that you should really be worried. I would say you can go a little past thirty five but after that your rudder will probably loose grip and the bow will point into the wind. I have only burried the rail twice in my 22 and both times it was really blowing and the seas were about four feet. But she came back up. The most important thing is to keep the hatches locked down so that if water does pour into the cockpit it will not continue to spill into the companion way and swamp the boat.

Stability

Thanks J. While we do tend to get a chop when the wind is sustained at at 15mph Plus on the lake, I do not think I will have to worry anout 4 foot swells.

22 will come up

I have a 79 swing keel O22 and have had the rail under several times and she has always come up fine...although water will get in the boat unless atleast the lower companionway board is in. Put the boards in, batten the hatches, hold on, and have fun!Lifejackets are always a good idea too.
