Does anyone care to comment on the overall performance of a well-tuned Oday 22 with similarly equipped common production boats like the Catalina 22? My boat needs tuning, to be sure (and a genoa!) but the speed seems pretty disappointing compared to everything else in the harbor. Thanks! Clay

Checker Cab!
I've had my "22" for 30 years (I must like it!). It ain't no race car! Its more like a good old solid "Checker Cab". A jenny will really help to windward. Its a good solid boat, the fixed keel will never leak or come "ungluded" like a swing keel can. I've been out in some pretty good blows...always got home. Great small cruiser (with wife and two young sons many years ago). Keep in mind; someone will always have something faster, no matter what you have! Good Luck!

The Catalina 22 moored next to me will always beat me to windward. On other points of sail we seem to be about the same. I use the gennie almost all the time unless the wind is really howling. The Oday is certainly more heavily constructed than the Catalina and I often go out in weather that the Catalina seems to want to stay home in. I think the Cat is a better performer but the Oday has more room and I consider it a better cruiser. Read some articles on rig tunning(or your owners manual) and try to milk it for all 5.89 knots that it is worth. Have fun and just remember to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

I appreciate your responses. Regarding the gennie, high winds, etc. what do you consider the maximum heel angle for the Oday 22 before a capsize is imminent? I'm going to put on an inclinometer and want to know when to back off, as I am new to the boat and still testing limits. Have you ever been close to capsizing? In what kind of wind? Clay

Capsizing
My father and I have been out in some pretty stiff winds, and never capsized. I recall one time that we went out with lots of wind, genoa up and messed around trying to find its limits. We would sheet in and heel over as far as possible. Every time we buried the side rail, the keel would pop out of the water, the bow would point into wind, and we would loose way. Not very good for making good time, but that wasn't the objective. We basically decided that we couldn't capsize unless we got hit with a *huge* gust or wave. I have a 1978 model, so the keel is short and there is no centerboard. I'm not sure how other models with longer keels would fare, though. Part of the reason we bought the Oday is it has a reputation as being very forgiving and having lots of internal buoyancy with a self-righting design. I can attest to the forgiving and buoyancy, I've never tested that self-righting part. Brad

Hi Clay, I have a 1979 22 foot O'Day centerboard and was hit by a microburst storm front with only the main sail up. I was quickly knocked over onto the lee rail and held there for waht seemed like an eternity, but releasing the mainsheet let the boat pay off nicely and she faced into the wind. Last weekend, I was sailing alone in stiff breezes and had a working jib up with the main. The boat was frequently overpowered in gusts and tended to heel over rather quickly (on old sails) and nose up after heeling over 45 degrees. At no time did I ever feel unstable. The keel's about 600- 800 pounds I think, and should keep the boat out of the water. I found that the boat was far easier to sail under main alone, with little if any, weather helm. I sail a oday 20 and I'm very impresed with it's performance, very stiff boat for a centerboard. I go out in very windy and rough condistions.Never get wet . I like brad and his dad have really pushed the boat to it's limits. I've burried the rail several times ,only for the boat to just head right up. I'd buy another oday in a secord. My rigging has been beefed up, oday had some light rigging in ther older boats. good luck
