I recently purchased a 1976 O'Day 22. Now I am a first time boat owner. I am interested in painting the bottom and topside. I purchased Coppersheild 45 ablative paint for the bottom and "Mega Gloss 1 part marine topside polyurethane enamel" for the topside. I have no way of finding out the type of bottom paint the previous owner used. Any suggestions on the proper way to tackle this project would be welcome.

If you have no idea what type of bottom paint was used, get all the old bottom paint off. It may not be compatible. Power wash it first, it will greatly reduce the amount you must sand, if any. Remember that primer and paint do not cover mistakes or areas not prepped properly, they magnify them. Spend all of your time on prep.. sanding sanding sanding.
