...is the drain at the center rear of the cockpit large enough to drain water?
Also, anyone have to change the hose or whatever it is between the cockpit and the transom? (I guess I really need to crawl back there and look at it!)LOL

Hi Jack. When I got knocked down in my 22 the self righting worked as advertised. There was a foot of water in the cockpit and it drained what I thought was rather quickly, perhaps 1 1/2 minutes. So yes it works well. Glad to have the hatch boards in that day. After returning to the dock my buddy wanted to try it with his Pearson 36 which we did. His didn't seem to drain as quickly but that may have been due to having shipped half of Lake Ontario aboard.

Hi Jack, Trinkka replied to my post ( Transom Ladder Permanent, 4-15-11 in the O'day forum ) and he cut a hole on the inside of the transom for access to the drain hose and rudder gudgeons and sealing a plate over it. I have been down inside that compartment more than once to get to the motor bracket nuts and bolts, no more cramped legs and skinned elbows, I'm cutting that hole ! I had my drain hole plug up with leaves and debris and snow and rain water in the cockpit floor was nearly up to the companionway ledge. I cleaned out the drain and the water drained out during the time it took me to remove the boom cover, set up my sheet lines, get the jib ready and cast off dock lines.

Cockpit drain

One word of caution about that drain. It's efficient enough, but is very easily clogged by leaves, etc. The sump area that the drain is in collects all kinds of debris, and some of it flushes into the drain hose.

I made a cleaning device out of some fence wire I had around the shop, and use it to clean the drain from the outside of the transom.

Excellent point- I wish they had made those drains differently, like maybe the way they are designed on a C22, the drains simply pass through the transom at cockpit floor level. This makes more sense to me, than passing it under the cockpit, a potential source of water into the cabin.

"A potential source of water into cabin" by indysailor makes me wonder if my 1979 O'day 22 should have that hose replaced after all these years. If it did leak would the water stay in the lazerette area or would it flow to the sump area in the cabin floor?
