I have had my O'Day 22 since 1972. I feel I know the boat well. If you have any questions, I will endeavor to give a good answer.

Hey Warren -

Hey Warren - Thanks for popping in and offering to be a fount of information. The questions ebb and flow, so please stick around even if we go through a phase where the big boats get the attention for a little while. Do you live in S. Freeport, or sail out of there? Two weeks and I'm back off Falmouth. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Oday 22

Hi Warren, and welcome. I'm new here too, as I just purchased my 22 in February. She's been is storage for about 15 years and I have finally got her all cleaned up. The folks here are great, they all share their know-how and experience. I do have a question for you, and that is what basic changes would you reccommend I make to my "new" boat? Thanks, ~Sergio

Sergio: Some of the things I've done: Installed a hatch in the forward compartment for added ventilation and escape. I removed the portside table and built a cabinet against the portside bulkhead, made the table footwell into a storage area and moved the port bunk forward. The boat has a balsa cored deck & coach roof given time water gets in and rots the wood causing "solf spots". One way to address these "spots" is to drill small holes over the "spots". Purchase the non-expanding type of foam insulation (its in a aerosol can) Inject the "foam" into the drilled holes, after the "foam" sets up seal the holes with Marine-Tex. Also don't go too big with a o/b motor - 3-6 HP will work fine. Good Luck Warren

Hey Warren, in removing the portside countertop, did you relocate the sink? I think I want to do the same thing. Thanks ~Sergio

Sergio: In my boat the sink is forward of the starboard bulkhead. Where is your sink? Warren

Warren, thanks for the reply. Mine has the sink aft of the port bulkhead, and forward of the port birth. What I would like to do, is move the head to the aft side of the port bulkhead (where the sink is) and place the sink opposite to that, on the starboard side. This would allow for more room and larger births in the forward cabin. This would also require an additional bulkhead to conceal the head and sink. The remaining space could be used for a galley on the port side and an eat-in countertop for two on starboard. Anyone with comments please feel free to jump in. Thanks, ~Sergio

Boom Rigging

Gary I'm not sure how the boom on the O'Day 23 is rigged. Does the main sheet run off the rear end of the boom or is it rigged at a mid-point on the boom? My O'Day 22 is rigged off the end of the boom with Schaefer hardware as follows: I have a fiddle with swivel & cam cleat mounted on the top of the port transom. On the top of the starboard transon is a single sheave. On the end of the boom is a double sheave. The main sheet is attached to the top of the fiddle block (port) via a eye splice & shackle. I suggest you visit a local marine store that caters to sailors, also I suggest you request a Defender marine catalog (www.defender.com) they handle a good supply of sailboat fittings..I'm done business with them for over 30 years. I hope this has been somewhat helpful. Good Luck!

leek

Hello 22owner i have a leek somewere in my 22 dont now were the water come from can it be the watertank?

"leek"

I do not have a "water tank" as such on my O'Day 22..What I do have is a 5 gal. water bag. The "bag" is free, not attached to the hull. If the bag did leak (which is quite likely) the water will collect in the bilge, above the keel. As far as looking for a leak, the most likely spots are the windows, the toe rails. If the leak is at the water line or below, I would look at the lower rudder fitting. Short of a crack in the actual hull, I would take a look at the outside of the keel. It is possable that if you have hit a rock or something and damaged the fiberglass in the keel area, water could be getting in there. If you would like to discuss this further...... skyking22@aopa.net Good Luck! Warren

Spray Hood

I have never had a "hood" & thus I don't know where to get one. I would suspect that there is no "stock" one made for the "22". I might suggest you go to a canvas shop, the kind that makes boat "mooring covers" & etc. Good Luck! Warren
