I have an O'Day 22 and want to mount a VHF whip at the top on either the port or starboard side of the mast. What is the consistancy of the mast? Is it hollow all the way down and OK for running coax?

yes it is
The 22's mast (which was made by Dwyer masts) is a hollow aluminum extrusion. The origional masts usually had styrofoam running up the entire length of the mast but as they have gotten older, the foam usually breaks down a bit. Take the mast down, it only takes about 15 minutes
