I am purchasing an ODay22 (1978) but see that the mast is made by Dwyer, and the boom by Kenyon. Was this normal for that year (or prior years) build? Thank you for any information.

Both were used

O'Day used several different Spar suppliers over their history. I suspect that the 1978 22 you are looking at has had the mast replaced at some point. O'Day did use DWYER Spars for a few years and in fact that is where D&R Marine gets the replacement spars that they sell now. I think KENYON Spars went out of business in the early 1980's?

Spars

It seems strange to me that O'Day would use two different make spars on the same boat, but I suppose that it's possible. My 222 has Z-Spar for mast and boom, along with Schaeffer hardware through out, but I do know that they also used Dwyer spars on their West coast O'day boats. Maybe something happened to the original boom and they replaced it with the Kenyon. I'm not even sure if Rudy Nickerson of D&R Marine would know about this, as he had worked at the O'Day factory in Fall River Ma. at one time.

read this website on masts

See the attached link and read about Kenyon and read the home page. Both gives insight into Kenyon mast and mast in general. My boat is an 85 and has Kenyon spars. Yes often boats were built with one companies mast another's boom and a third's spreaders all on the same boat. It is still done today. Ed K
