HELP - I have a 1975 O'Day 22 hull # SCZ600MU1078. I ordered a new sail manufactured by Sails East. The Luff, Foot & Leach are the same as my original O'Day Sail but the roach ( space from the Leech to the outside edge of the sail ) extends 4-6" more than the old sail so the leach side hits and does not clear the aft Stay. I believe that the hardware including the mast are original and not altered. The company that sells the sail tells me that they sell numerious sails of the same cut each year without customer concerns. They have compaired the sail with others and it appearantly is not a miss-cut, and have installed the sail on a 74 O'Day 22 without a problem. We checked to be sure the sail is all the way to the top of the mast and have tried lowering the boom and still have interference. Has anyone experienced a simular problem or have a recommendation for a solution that will make the sail fit without interference with the Aft Stay other than re-cutting the sail. Mainsail Overhang
Hey CaseyJoe: I have a replacement main on my '79 Oday sloop. It also overlaps the aft stay about 4 to 6 inches. It's not a real big deal, and in good breezes, the main passes the aftstay effortlessly when tacking. In lighter winds (under 5 knots) the main sometimed gets hung up at the battens and needs a little tweak on the mainsheet to yank it past. But again, I never had a problem with it, and the boat likes the more powerful main. I was out yesterday in strong breezes and having a main with a little extra roach helped. By the way - the serial hull number you listed looks like a 78 year boat unless I am confused and wrong. You have a 75? The year should be imprinted in the hull ID number I think. The bottom line: You ordered a sail for an O'Day 22.... The sail they sent does not fit the boat! They need to repair or replace the sail. No more "Mr. Nice Guy!" If you gave them bad numbers, then its your problem. I have the O'Day 22 sail "spec Sheets" if you want to give me your address, I'll send a copy. Good Luck!

I will check the actual hull this weekend to see if I have a typo. on the card. I gather that the last 2 digits on the hull # is the year of manufacture? Regards,

NOT an Oday 22 hull #
If that hull # is correct then the problem is that your boat is not an O'day 22. I have included links describing the meaning of the hull number. In short the hull number you listed is for a homebuilt boat from South Carolina. The first three digits of the hull number are the manufacturer identification code. SCZ indicates a South Carolina homebuilt. XDY would indicate an Oday.

Chris, Thanks. I'm back in Oriental now and was able to give the hull # a visual check. The correct Hull number ( differerent for some reason than the hull # on the registration card) is XDYJ1534M75C so it is Manufactured by O'Day Corp. in Oct. 1975.
