We have a 1972 O'Day 22(our first sailboat), which we aquired last year. We placed our gas tank on the deck just under the tiller, which takes up a good amount of room and seems to be kind of unsafe while sailing in rougher conditions. Is this the typical set up? If so has anyone figured out where the tank can be safely put ie. in the storage areas? Any help is greatly appreciated. PS. This is such a great site, I've posted 2 questions so far and read many other topics of discussion, the wealth of knowledge that's here can't be beat. So thank all of you for your help and knowledge, hopefully when I get some more experience I'll be able to give back.

On the 222 there is a locker
Hi Curt, On the 222, there is a cockpit locker on the starboard side that vents to the cockpit (i.e., it doesn't allow fumes into the bilge) where the gas tank is stored. I would assume you have something similar. The main thing is to have the gasoline fumes to not get into the cabin or bilge where they would potentially cause a fire risk. By the way, I grew up in the Seneca Lake area, and brought my boat back to Seneca Lake a few years ago. Its a nice (albeit cold) lake for sailing. We had a good time. Enjoy the season. ...I have a 1975 model of the Oday 22. Like yours it did not come with a fuel locker like the later models did. I am planning to 'install' one at the rear of the port side seat in the cockpit. I will cut a hole large enough for a fuel tank to slide in, and fibreglass a shelf and bulkhead in. A friend did it on one of his boats, it worked out fine. The tank does not have to be very big anyway. Jack Hart SEA-YA!
