Oday 22 Hidden Harbor
I am looking at purchasing an Oday 22. The price is almost too good to be true. what has me a bit nervous is this plaque. I think the serial number is fake. I can't find 74's with this high of a serial number.

Has a plaque says

BUILT BY
The O'DAY COMPANY
FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS

Hull 3286 (looks like it was restamped)
no
Class Number 399

Any advice. The owner states boat is sound. I am taking a closer look in the morning. He is offering 800. Sounds too good to be true.

Welcome to the forum BinJoey.
Might not be enough time for someone with more knowledge than I to answer before you go to look at the boat so here are a couple of suggestions.
Take a look at the post further down about an O'day 15. Sunbird gives some insight to the O'day numbering system. Using that information this 22 is probably younger than a 74.
Does the owner have the title and registration? You most likely will need to register the boat and will need the title. If he doesn't be aware.

Also, read some of the threads on buying a boat in the trailer sailers section to learn what to look for.

She ain't a 1974!
The fact that she has a Hull# and Class# tells us that she was built prior to the November 1, 1972 USCG required HIN program.
On all O'DAYs built prior to that date (so, basically 1972 and earlier models, although it is possible that some early 1973 models had the plates) the Hull# indicates total O'DAY boats built, so this is the 3286th O'DAY built, however that would be VERY low for a 1972 boat, my 1969 Widgeon was Hull# 22698..... did they leave a few digits off your boat's Hull#?
Class# refers to how many of that model, so this would be the 399th O'DAY 22 built and that makes sense given that the 22 was introduced as a 1972 model and O'DAY could have built 400 or more that first year, although it would seem to be a late 1972 or maybe early (between August and October?) 1973 model. Take a look on the outside of the transom, there may be a molded in Hull-ID-Number, it should be up near the top, starboard corner, but may be in hte dead center of the transom based on where it is on my DS II. HIN will be a 12-digit sequence beginning with XDYJ. The last 2 numbers will indicate Model Year. (Some later boats end in a letter, example mine ends with M79E, which means 1979 Model, built in the "E" month, which was December 1978, since Model years ran August - July and 1979 model year was Aug 78 to Jul 79).

I actually found some pictures in my files of a 22 that I have labeled as "3286", I have her filed under 1973. Must have seen her listed for sale on eBay some time in the past.

If this boat has a HIN, I would expect it to read "XDYJ0399mm73" where "mm" will be the 2-digit month number, ie: 01 for January, 02 Feb, 08 Aug... However, she may only have that little ID Plate.

Nailed her!!

That is the exact very boat. She doesn't look much different now.

I took these pictures the other day. She is for sale. It is my first boat and I want to start with something I can put back together.

She is forsale and I am looking hard at bringing this boat back to life.

What can you tell me about this boat?

Joseph

$800 is a great price for this boat if you get all the pieces and there is no serious hull leakage.

While my 1972 O'Day 22 is already tucked away in storage for the winter, the registration indicates hull number 3073. Sail number is 216. Not sue if that proves anything at all, but you may want to work it into your investigation somehow!

Re: California Weather

We are luck to get 5 good months here in Northern Michigan. Mid May to mid October are the absolute limits. Anytime from Mid-September on we can have frost or freeze at night, and same for last half of May....

On launch day we joke about the season getting short already!
