I have just acquired a used 1973 O'day 22. Generally the boat appears to be in quite good shape with most problems being of the cosmetic nature. Several issues that I could use some assistance with: - The interior lining (vinyl?) appears to be painted and is cracked and peeling in about 4" - 6" patches. Remedy? Has anyone ever stripped this lining? Are there satisfactory alternatives to finishing the interior surfaces? - The tiller handle is missing (broken and discarded?). Any suggestions for replacement? - The electrical system appears to function but is obvioulsy dated. Are there recommendations for replacement (shortcuts to wiring, speciffiec items to consider suc as LED's, etc.)? Thank you for any information that you can give. David

I have a 75 oday25, I just started redoing the interior of mine. I am stripping the vinyle off by hand. It comes off fairly easy. I just get it started in a loose spot and peal as far as it will go. It was put on with contact cement i think. Mine was all yellowed and dirty. Some places I peeled had moisture underneathit. I will probably sand and paint the rough surface. I also found that the bulkheads had rot on the lower 2-4". I will fix that too. Try drmarine.com for a new tiler. oday experts.

I've had my 22 for 34 years, since new. Unless the interior is really bad....I might suggest washing the vinyl with a bleach solution, it may be loaded with mildew. As to the tiller....purchase a teak flag pole at your local marine store. Cut to lenght and shape the end to enter the fitting at the rudder.

Liner Suggestion

I've got a 76' O'Day 25 and last year we replaced the liner (cloth w/foam). Other than labor intensive, it wasn't a big deal. We looked at a lot of possible replacement materials, but decided on indoor/outdoor carpet. It worked out great and looks great too. Home Cheapo usually has a couple of colors but a good carpet store will have a wider selection at around the same price.

I bought a J22 tiller as a replacement on my 22.These can be purchased on line thru various vendors. It is more substantial than the stock ODay tiller.

Lining replacement

The interior lining of our Oday was pretty funky by the time we became it's current owners.I pulled it all off.Next I used a snow scraper to remove most of the remaining glue .Finally a scrub brush took th rest off with out scratching the hull.We kept a shop vac handy .Actually the vac stayed outside the boat so anything that went throught the vac was sprayed out in the the yard and not back into the boat. We also went the outdoor carpet route and have been more than please. The boat is quieter for sleeping warmer during cool night and cooler during the dog days of summers. It was also very cost effective.
