I AM REDOING A 77 ODAY 22.DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY HINTS/TIPS ON REMOVING AND REBUILDING THE BULKHEADS.I WOULD LIKE TO COMPLETELY REBUILD THE GALLEY ADDING SHELVING/STORAGE ETC.THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GALLEY IS THE PORTA POTTY AREA W/SOME ROOM FOR SHELVING.ALSO THE AREA INFRONT OF THE STARBOARD BULKHEAD HAS A BIT OF SHELVING AREA.ARE THE BULKHEADS STRUCTURAL? CAN I SAIL WHILE THEY ARE REMOVED?ALSO,IN GENERAL I WOULD LIKE ANY TIPS OR HINTS ON STORAGE MODIFICATIONS.THE PORT BERTH GOES BACK A LONG WAY.I WOULD LIKE TO BE MORE SHIP SHAPE RATHER THAN HAVING IT LOOK LIKE THE TRUNK OF MY CAR DOES.

Bulkhead

Hi Lloyd, I recently purchased a '77 Oday 22 and have also begun to rework the only bulkhead she has. The wood is fine, but that mustard color has to go! In answer to your question, the bulkhead is structural as it holds the compresion post for the mast and also provides attachment for the chainplates that hold your port & starboard shrouds. Any other walls are likely to be the hull and less than 1/4" in thickness. Don or Justin, please feel free to jump in and correct me if I'm wrong. ~Sergio

As Sergio says...

...those bulkheads are structural. Not only should you not sail, but I would be reluctant to walk on the deck with the bulkheads out. It is possible to built structures to take the load to the hull without the bulkheads, but unless you're a marine engineer, I wouldn't want to try it. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Bulkheads

Why remove them? The bulkheads, besides adding needed structural stability and grounding for the shroud chainplates and mast step plate, also give the 22' a wonderful privacy screen. The one thing I love about my 22' is the private, full length vee berth up forward. I am 6 foot 4 inches in height, and have not seen many larger sailboats with a berth long enough for my frame. The O'Day 22 has plenty of (private) berth area forward and that was a strong reason for my buying one. I too want to add to the galley arrangement. I want to relocate the sink closer to the centerline of the boat (where the stove recess is presently, and put a small ice box where the sink currently is. I am toying around with loosing the port berth and converting it to a small sitting bench and stove unit, but ideas are still preliminary (more later!). I would be interested indeed with what you have in mind for your interior renovations. Are you thinking of making your 22 a cruiser versus a weekender? Keep in touch! bulkheads

I redid cabin of my 77 O'Day. I cut the bulkheads from port to starboard to get them out. Then duplicated them. Be sure to use oak on the edge of the port bulkhead as that is the mast support. I also remanufactured the cabinets with 7 coats of polyurathan using 1/2 brch plywood. It wa s great project.
