Just got my boat to the marina (late start) and plan on sailing out on Sunday. was doing some minor cleaning/maintenance over the last few days, and today realized I don't have a boom vang. I do have a line that hangs from the bottom of the boom that seems to cleat at the base of the mast, but I have a feeling thats not what its used for... Anyhow, is a boom vang an absolute "must have", or can I live without it? thanks

Hi kcraft - While a boom vang is an essential tool to maximize sail shape off the wind, it by no means is essential for getting out there and having fun. When you sail downwind, the belly of the sail will fill (increasing draft - more so with higher windspeeds), causing the end of the boom to lift higher. The vang holds to boom down for better sail shape. So go have fun and be thinking of how you can rig a vang in the near future. Hope this helps, Trevor

what year 22??
my 1973 22 had a vang but it was ancient. It attached to a fitting on the underside of the boom with a short lenght of wire with a ball end. I replaced the vang with a new one from D&R Marine and kept the wire w/ball end to attach to the boom. I bought a mast hound and rivited it to the base of the mast.

its a 72
Its a 72. I can't tell if the mast is original or not... I notice most people have a gold colored mast, and mine is silver. There is a small metal wrung at the bottom of the mast, I'm guessing where a vang would attach. I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't have any trouble getting out this weekend without one.. thanks!

Look at the "more fun stuff" link on the oday owners home page, there is an oday 22 manual posted there, with diagrams that show how the vang is to be attached. You have it right, but if you want to see it in the manual, there it is.

No Vang
If your just a "cruiser" or day sailor...Forget the Vang. I've had my "22" for 32 years & no Vang.

As mentioned, the original vang attaches to the boom via slot that a ball slips into. The ball is attached to a block and tackle assembly, with the tail end slipping into a jam cleat. I think it is a 2:1 system. The whole thing is attaches to a metal eye strap riveted to the front of the mast a couple inches from the base. Just ties with line around from the rear and through the strap. A disadvantage with this system is that if you furl the main as O'Day intended, you pull back on the boom and roll the sail around the boom. That means that you can't attach the vang onto the slot in the boom. If you have a different reefing system, it will still work fine. If you don't have a vang, don't worry about it too much. If you want one, look in the Harken catalog - I think the 2:1 vang listed is a pretty close match. Or DR Marine has a boom vang kit specific to the 22 for $75.
