Motor size

I bought my 20 with a Johnson 6hp two stroke and it seems to work fine. I have read that the recommended MAX size is a 12 hp.

Overpowered

When I bought my 20 it came with a 7.5 Honda 4 stroke. I can almost waterski behind it and the excess weight of that motor effects the way the boat os handles. I race on a 26 Excalibur and the owner only has three hp 4 stroke and it moves the boat along just fine

Outboard

We have a 3.5 hp. Nissian 2 stroke long shaft on our 19' mariner. It has always had more than enough power even on the very rough and steep waters of lake Michigan.

Depends on where you sail

Interesting reponse from Bill about the Honda 7.5 because I just got one to replace an Evinrude 4.5. I sail in Barnegat Bay, NJ. To get to the ocean I have to go through a whirlpool, turbulent canal. I felt I needed the extra power to navigate these waters safely. So in answer to your question, I would consider your sailing environment and make a decision based on that. Obviously the less you can get away with the better as we are sailing people, not motor people.

shaft length

I put a Honda 5 hp on my Oday 20 -- standard shaft length, because that fit the factory bracket set-up. The power is just fine, but I wish I had gotten a long shaft, and fussed with the bracket as needed. When I single-hand and go forward, the motor comes out of the water -- no cooling. If I set the motor deeper, I would drown the motor when using significant power.
