Have a 20' with a broken tiller, does anyone know the length(orignal) of a replacement and is it a good idea to make one out of solid wood or buy a composite one?

J22 tiller

I relaced the tiller on my Oday 22 with a J 22 tiller with the metal strapes at the point of attachment with the rudder. Many mail order stores such as APS carry these items at varioius prices. It has served me well, and is much more secure and attractive than the stock version

I have replaced the tiller several times on my 1972 O'Day 22. I found what works real well is to purchase a teak flag pole from a marine supply store. You can "file or grind" the base of the pole to fit the metal fitting. As to lenght, pick one thats comfortable. Good Luck!

You could give D&R a call and buy the correct replacement part for $68 and be sailing in about 15 min. after you receive the part. Take a look at the link. http://www.drmarine.com/products.asp?cat=147

I had a couple made for very little money at a local cabinet shop here in town. I took teh wood home and refinished myself. I now have three on board at all times
