Oday 20 stored 10 years in unheated garage

I have an opportunity to buy an Oday 20 with a trailer and OB that has been stored in a garage for ten years. It outwardly appears to be in very good condition.What would you look for when inspecting it? Would you recommend against buying it because it has been stored for ten year? Thanks!

Why not

You gotta look for all the normal stuff in an old boat; soft spots on deck or hull, compression post, signs of leaking 9from inside) around shrouds, windows, sails condition (did they become a mouse house). Stored in a garage sure beats under the pine tree. The motor might be roblematic if not shut down well. Or if water was left in tanks. If all else checks out, buy it sail it and never put in in a garage again for longer then TLC requires.Good luck,Mike

I agree with Mike

If you check out all the problem areas and all is acceptable, go for it. One thing not mentioned is look for excessive deformation in the hull around the bunks on the trailer. It shouldn't be a problem, but if it looks like they are caved in, it can be. I would also recommend rebedding all the hardware before you start sailing.My two cents

Rebedding

A few years ago I got a 20 that was in the same condition. A fella used it very infrequently and stored it inside. It made for a very clean and dry boat. Brian made a very important point. Just about every hole in the deck leaked. All the caulk had long deteriorated past the point of beingwaterproof. It's a great boat and with a little work rebedding things (windows included) it was just fine. Good luck!

You were lucky to have it stored inside

I agree about the calking of every hole . I purchased an O'Day 192 which had been stored outside for 12 years without a covering. I learned that black alge turns a pretty shade of green when scrubbed. I had to replace the tires on the triad trailer but overall with a little elbow grease and a B&D power scrubber, I got a bargain. I was lucky, the outboard had been stored indoors and only required a new water pump. I'm looking forward to the season and couldn't be happier with my boat. Go for it Gil!
