Oday 20 Rockledge
So I have lived aboard several sailboats through-out my life. However, I recently became a family man, Aug 2nd @ 2115 my daughter Kali Nova was born leaving me with compromises. Lol. I wanted my daughter to grow up around and learn about sailing. I went on the hunt and I found an 1975 Oday 20 with trailer for $1,200.00. To me, its wonderful, I have a blank canvas and I wanted a place to share the restoration and get advice when as the process unfolds. I have a working knowledge of all the different skills needed and practice to a minor degree but this will be my first top-down restoration.

Welcome and congrats on the two new additions to your family! Don't under estimate the amount of time and money it takes to do a full restore. I'd suggest a balance of the right way vs what's practical so you can finish your project and spend time with the little one (and keep your significant other happy). There's a wealth of knowledge on this forum from people who are happy to help. Feel free to dive in, ask questions and share your progress!

Looks like an ambitious project with a newborn . It will be a great little family boat though when its done. I have a Capri 22 and it has been a perfect size to take my 2 and 4 year old out by myself to motor and sail around. Looking forward to seeing your Oday be brought back to life.

Thanks bub.....I'm excited too. The draft opens up so many more possibilities than the other sailboats I've had over the years. 2.5' with swing up.

Todays task....Removed bulk head and clean up V birth cutting left-overs off the side of the hull. Its going to be a slow process I know but worth every bit of effort.

Power tools are my life. Ever use a pneumatic 90lb jack-hammer under water....Its a blast lol. Im a handy man and I'm like a kid in a candy store when I go to the hardware stores. I made it my lifes goal to learn how to do anything and everything I can...Mainly wanted to get to the point I could build my own home ground up with as little outside knowledge as possible.

Thanks for posting the images. I am curious as to your planned layout. Are you going to replace the transverse bulkhead and the v-berth? If not, you might want to check out the interior of the O'day 222. Keep us posted.

Lol...I sit inside her often contemplating the layout. At first I considered just replacing everything as it was but the more I demo, the more I realize I can get creative and still maintain structural integrity. The old floor is coming out as well but for now it's just a slow demo and a lot of daydreaming due to our newbourne. I work on it everyday for atleast an hour.

Just keep the .JPG's under a meg or so to keep things moving along. Also very easy to just copy and paste pictures where you want them to sit in your post.

Removed bulk head and clean up V birth
You do know that the bulkhead is the only think holding up the cabin roof :yikes: ? Maybe keep your overweight brother-in-law off it until you've replaced the bulkhead.

RE: "The old floor is coming out as well but for now it's just a slow demo and a lot of daydreaming due to our newbourne (sic)."

The "floor" as you call it is the cabin sole. I cannot say for sure, but if it was designed like all Ray Hunt O'days, the sole would be a grid type structure tabbed into the hull after it came out of the mould. IMHO, given the type of keel it has, I would leave it in place lest the hull deform while you are working in there without any internal bracing. I've heard of this happening to Rhodes 19s when the internal bracing (in this case a wood lattice structure) was completely removed. You could brace the hull externally, but to me it does not seem worth the effort. FWIW, I would do whatever modifications are necessary to get good access underneath, clean it, paint it and start from there.

Lol...yes I do. I put supports in to prevent sag overtime.
