o'day 20 port side cockpit hole

Okay all of you o'day 20 owners here's a quick question.

I am inquiring as to what went in the 4ish" hole that it on the port side of the cockpit bulkhead. Right now it is empty but I want to put back in whatever was in that hole.

I don't think that is what goes there. I have looked into compasses and I this this hole is too large and I don't believe that a compass would be too deep for the bulkhead

Don't see a pic to know for sure, but 4", actually 100MM, is the cut-out size for S.R. Mariner instruments. I believe the same size case for Data Marine, Moore, and similar instruments. Know for sure about S. R. Mariner, and they were common during the O'day 20 era.

I previously had it covered with wood panels but got tired of them so I'm polishing it up and wanted to fill it with some instrument. I've only been sailing a few so id love some input as to a good instrument for this hole.

Oh and it's 4.5" 114mm diameter.

Data Marine and Moore are available. Moore advertises in Good Old Boat & elsewhere. They may actually be the ones doing the DataMarine, also. Kind of retro, but perfect for filling the hole you, and a thousand others, have in their boats already.

oops! just saw the 4.5" post. So NEVER MIND, unless the Moore replacements are that size. One more thought. Those old 100mm gauges were slightly larger than 4" -n we always enlarged them with a file after using a 4" hole saw. I don't think the rim on these gauges would cover a 4.5" hole, but you could check. I could see someone drilling oversize because they needed slightly larger than a 4" saw. But 4.5 is quite a bit over. You never know what a previous owner might have done, though.



Do you have thru-hulls for a knot meter impeller or depth transducer?

Yeah I'm not sure what it was but it is a perfect circle which led me to believe it was done right. I do not have any of those through hull items.

The Ritchie Navigator series of compasses, which has been around of a long time and very popular, uses a 4 1/2" cut-out. My best guess is that this is the missing link on your boat.

If nothing else, it would solve your problem.

Not super excited to see that it is going to cost me $250+ to fill the hole with a navigator but thanks everyone for the advice.
