Hi everyone, need some advice on an outboard for my oday 20, it has an existin bracket rated at 59 lbs at 7.5hp any suggestions, ie honda 4 stroke? thanks

I've got a O'day 22 and the 6 hp engine moves it along nicely. I think anything over that would be too much. I've got a 1985 2 stroke that runs great, but its a bit on the dirty side. If you don't mind the money I imagine a 4 stroke would be nice.

yup, looking into the honda 4 stroke, but will the 20in long shaft work. the 5-6hp only comes in the 20in, what is a durable long lasting motor to look at thanks

2 vs 4 Stroke
I guess I may disagree with some of your replies. I've had my O'Day 22 for 32 years. for the first 10 or so I had a Johnson 4 long shaft. It did everything I needed to do including fight a strong tide. I currently have a Evinrude 6 long shaft, excellent engine. Both are 2 stroke engines. Two important items to consider.... 1. Its a SAIL boat...How much motoring are you really going to do? The cost of fuel for a year with these small engines will not amount to much. 2. Weight...The lighter the better! Four strokes are heavy. For my money, I would go with a 4-5 HP two stroke. If you can find a good used OMC (Johnson or Evinrude)with a long shaft (there used to be a "kit" available to convert these motors from short to a long shaft) go for it. Good Luck!

Four strokes are not only heavier and quieter than a two stroke, they also generate much more low-end torque. This means they put a lot more stress on the mounting bracket. Do not put a four stroke engine on a bracket not specifically rated to accept a four stroke. One of the main reasons I recently bought a new two stroke instead of a four was because I would also have had to replace the mounting bracket, which would have meant redrilling the spacer block behind the bracket, and the transom. Too much work for me.

You'll need no more than 4 hp and if you want to go cheap the nissan and tohatsu 3.5's will push you along nicely. Personally I'd go for a 2 stroke for the light weight with a remote tank for easier, and less frequent refueling.

My guess (I am an environmental lawyer for what its worth) is that EPA will eventually regulate two strokes out of existence. However, I cannot conceive of them actually mandating that as of date X, they can no longer be used. There are too many out there. Most likely, they will outlaw the manufacture of two strokes after a certain date and let normal turnover take care of the problem. Sometime way down the road, EPA or a state may outlaw the actual use of the museum pieces, but that won't be for quite some time.

honda 5hp is perfect for 22
i have an o'day 22 with a honda 5. it is much quieter than the 2-stroke 6hp it replaced and that's great. to make up for any difference in weight (dif between 2-stroke 6hp w/generator and 4-stroke 5hp is small) i updated my boats battery. go from a full size deep cycle battery on the same side as the motor, to a self contained, lead acid recharable (in a nice case, centerline of the boat, under the entrance to the cabin) recharged by a 2amp solar cell on the cabin hatch cover, and the entire boat balances better. works great for me. good sailing, bob

worth the extra cost
based on the rsp's and since I am land locked and sail mostly on the surrounding lakes, seems that a motor from 4 to 6 hp, four stroke would be worth the extra cost
