does anyone have a picture of the boom attachment to the backstay and how to rig this, and when one is raising and lowering the mast, do you keep the port and starboard rigging attached? or do you disconnect. thanks rob
Robert - are you asking about the mainshet attachment from the end of the boom? I am not familiar with the O'Day 20 but from the photos in the specs section it looks just like my 23. Does it stay like this while under sail? How does the boom move if it does stay connected while under sail? This is my first season with my boat so I apologize if my rigging questions are dumb.
The "Pigtail" is really only for use when the sail is down. To support the boom when you are underway you would need to add a topping lift (a line from the top of the mast to the end of the boom). This is most useful when are putting in a reef, it will keep the boom from dropping into the cockpit when you release the halyard. On my 192 (which has the same backstay / mainsheet arrangement as your 20) I added a fixed length topping lift which is the same length as the mast. This holds the boom about perpendicular (lower than the pigtail) when the sail is down but has adequate slack when the sail is raised. I hook the boom on the pigtail for a little more headroom when motoring distances.
