O'day 20 1973 cabin drainage system?

Hi!

Does anyone know how the draining system in an O'day 20 (year 1973) works? The hole in the cabin floor of the O'day (close to the door to the cockpit) I'm trying to fix up seems to go away from where the draining hole is in the bottom of the boat, and it's draining VERY slowly.

On a side note, does anyone have a good method for getting rid of carpenter ants?

My research team got this boat for free after it had been siting around for ~5 years and we are hoping to get in in the water in a few weeks to test some instrumentation on the mast.

O'DayQs I also am having a major issue with water intake in my hull areas. It fills up somehow and won't exit out the way it came in? I have a O'Day 20 1974 and I did ask anyone out there if they discovered the same issues and what they had to do to correct it. (No answer yet) Otherwise my boat has about a ton of water in it and won't release through the cockpit drain hole either? Do you know any solution? Thanks Sailorman66

cockpit drains through a hose connected to a through hull fitting in the bottom of the boat. the hose may have some cracks in it allowing water to enter. I changed my hose but had difficulty finding a prebent hose to make the two 90 degree turns. I used a marine water hose with wire in side the hose wall but it also cracked after a season or two.

Yes; the cockpit is above waterline. Therefore, the water will drain down the hose into the water. There will be water standing in the hose up to the waterline. Any water entering the top the hose will push an equal amount of water out the bottom. The key is to not allow water into the space between the hull and the cockpit.

If your drain hoses are not leaking, you can take them off and clear out the insides. Once clean, they will drain OK, but any little bits of leaves, bugs, etc., will re-clog them. If I have water standing in the cockpit, I apply a sink plunger to the drain openings and flush them clean. That problem has gone away since I bought a cockpit cover.
