Ahoy! I am the proud owner of an 1987 Oday 192. I'm just real curious about the 192. I see listings for 19 footers on about every Oday page. When you get up to the larger vessels, you see the 242's the 272's etc. but I see little if anything about the 192's. Are they rare? Does anyone know the the history behind the 192 versus the 19? Is it a second generation 19? I've seen Oday 19's on the lake and they seem to be a very different design. If you can lend any insight to the origin or design of the Oday 192 please let me know. Another O'Day 192 Owner
I have just agreed to purchase a 1987 O'Day and can't wait to get her on the water. What is the recommended outboard HP for this boat? Any preference to a 2 or 4 stroke engine and any general advice you have on this boat. Many thanks, John

Congratulations John, I know you are going to be very happy with the 192. As to the outboard - I have a 6 hp two stroke Suzuki on mine and that's almost too much. It will push the boat to hull speed at a little over half throttle but adds a lot of weight to the stern. I sail in the bays, ICW and occasional short foray into the Gulf so felt I needed the power. For lake sailing I might go with a 2.5 hp - 4 at the most. Four strokes are definately the way of the future if you buy a new motor. They are quieter, less fumes, no mixing, carburetor and plugs won't gum up (as quickly) etc. - and they have good torque at low rpm which is very helpful manuvering a sailboat. But of course - they are heavier. Lots of choices but I would definately stay under 6 hp in a two stroke, 4 hp with a four. Hope this helps some John Sims Pensacola, Fl

Outboard recommendation
Thanks for the outboard recommendation! In addition to sailing Atlanta area lakes, I also plan to sail the bay waters and ICW in the Destin and Fort Walton area over a couple of long weekends this summer. Do you recommend the 15" or 20" shaft for the factory outboard motor bracket? Thanks, John

John, my Suzuki is the long shaft (20" I believe) but I think maybe the 15" would work as I could go down another click or two with the bracket if need be. If you have a choice, you're probably better off sticking with the long shaft as the controls will be higher and easier to reach. Please feel free to E mail me direct if you have other questions. I'd get the longer shaft
With a long shaft you will be able to keep the powerhead clear of the water when sailing in chop but still have enough leg to use the intermediate position. You will also experience much improved reverse thrust with the long-shaft. Justin - O'day Onwers' Web

O'Day 192 Engine & Other Items
I am the original owner of a 1985 O'Day 192. I primarily sail inland lakes in Central Ohio and make an annual trip to Lake Erie. Powered by 1986 Johnson 4 hp long shaft (approx 20 inches) engine. The hp is sufficent for the 192. Anything larger then 6 hp well weight to much and affect the boats balance Excellent boat. It has served me well.
