I'm the new owner of a 1986 O'Day 192. The boat is in very good condition. Just needs some cosmetic work and clean up.
This afternoon I tried to take the main hatch teak runners off. I dug out the bung thinking that there would be a screw benieth it. There wasn't one. There seems to be a metal piece just inboard of where the bung was. It is not a screw.
Does anyone know how these runners are installed /or removed ?
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Another 192 owner might know, but your best source is probably Rudy Nickerson at D&R Marine (508) 644-3001 Rudy was the Parts Dept. Manager at O'DAY from 1973 to 1989. He now runs a little Pop & Mom shop in Assonet, MA selling O'DAY Parts and serving up answers to O'Day questions. He has a web-site www.drmarine.com but phone calls get better and faster results.

That seems very odd to me. I have a 1986 O'Day 222 that I bought new years ago and I removed one of the hatch runners and didn't run into any problems.
My question is, why are you removing the hatch runner? Is it broken or is the hatch broken where it slides in the runners and you want to remove and fix it?

It's broken. I want to repair it, then clean and oil it (them). Also I want to clean under and around the area.

As far as I know, the Teak runners are screwed to the cabin top like mine. I'm finding out that they did some foolish things to these boats sometimes at these factories.
I talked to someone in Reno NV who owns an 87 O'Day 222 who couldn't figure out why the centerboard pendant lines were wearing out every year. Come to find out, they never installed the single sheave U bolt assembly up inside the the centerboard keel slot at the factory. The pendant line pipe in the cabin on these boats is shaped like an "L" and where it enters a small enclosure which is shaped like a hump on the cabin sole, it needs to ride through this sheave. Most of the O'Day 23s and 25s have a straight pipe that comes down to the keel with no need of a sheave. Our boats, and the O'Day 26s have these sheave assemblies.
It's possible that they may have done something out of the ordinary in installing the runners on your boat. I would just go ahead and remove the bungs on the other runner and see if it's installed different.

I talked to Rudy at D&R this morning. According to him the runners are attached with screws. I dug out a few more bungs as Trinkka suggested.
There are screws under the bungs but off center. I'll go ahead and remove both runners, repair them, clean them up, then re-install them.

Thank you for your help and suggestions.

Mahalo, be careful of your teak oil once you get them cleaned and re-installed. The PO of my boat said he cleaned and oiled the teak in the spring, and I bought the boat in the fall, and there wasn't a trace of oil left. I use Watco Teak Oil on a western red cedar kayak paddle I have, and it doesn't last too long... and that's on wood that doesn't sit outside all the time.

If you like a warm, wood colored teak, you might consider Sikkens Cetol, but be careful of the color. The Natural is an orangy color. It's supposed to be much easier to deal with than varnish. I haven't used it yet, but I'll be experimenting on my toe rails and hatch slides this spring...

My friend Wayne replaced his Teak hand rails and runners with StarBoard. Also, he used HDPE for his sliding hatch to ride on which that alone is a great idea. Every time I open my companionway sliding hatch it makes a screeching noise that's almost unbearable to the ears.
That stuff can be used for a lot of things on a boat.
