We are having problems with the kick up rudder line getting jammed between the rudder and the rudder housing. I know that some owners have made mods to correct the problem and wonder what their solutions were.

What you're going to need is some 3/16" Bungee cord and some stainless steel "C" type squeeze on clamps for it. You can get away without the special tool for these little wire clamps by using a pair of large pliers or channel locks. The Bungee is attached to the rudder blade pendant line and to the second bolt under the tiller on the rudder head. When the rudder blade is tipped up, the Bungee cord puts tension on the pendant line and keeps it in the center of the upper portion of the blade. I can only give you some dimensions for my O'Day 222 rudder which I have modified myself. Even with the Bungee cord, there's no guarantee that the pendant line will not get caught in between the blade and the inside of the rudder head. I wound up making my rudder head fit a little tighter to the blade on my rudder. Here's some pics and a sketch of mine. The bungee should be about 12" long including the loop. Attach the bungee so that it is heading in the same direction as the end of the pendant line. It's easier to make the loop around the bolt and squeeze on the clamp. Good Luck!
