O'Day 192 - 1986 - Bilge Leak Question

Hi all,

I was hoping an experienced O'Day 192 owner might be able to help me out. After learning to sail while living in Boston and building a small 12ft sailing skiff while living in LA - I've finally broke down and got into sailing again in GA (Lake Lanier).

I purchased an '86 O'Day - 192 - I absolutely love it. Everything is in great shape. Sails like a breeze and is great for my small family (2 kids 6 and 8).
However, my bilge is filling up with water after each sail (I keep it on trailer in yard when no sailing). I've look at other posts and and common leaks, I can't seem to find out where this one is leaking. Below are a couple of pictures of the bilge from the cabin - I also am collecting water at the stern of the boat in the battery box area under the cockpit (no pictures). Does your boat have a center board that is raised by a winch? If so might want to check the hose that the cable runs in, They do leak it seems...

Your boat has a cockpit self bailing hose located in the bilge close to the transom. It could be split or leaking at this hose or the lower gudgion plate could be leaking. It's probably the self bailing hose. Just open the hatch to the lazarett and reach in there and feel the hose for a split. Don't try to crawl into that hatch opening unless you have someone handy to pull you out if you happen to get stuck in it.
The best way to get at that hose is to cut a hole in the center of the inside transom and install an 8" Beckson Deck Plate like I did. This way you could fix or replace the hose, remove your gudgions and caulk them all by yourself with no help from anyone.
Your hose is probably a single rubber hose that is bent in the center.

I replaced my hose years ago with two pieces of clear vinyl reinforced hose, a nylon 90 degree hose fitting, and about four stainless steel hose clamps. You can buy this stuff at any hardware, Lowe's, or Home Depot store.
The picture that you have posted shows the s.s. pipe for the centerboard pendant line. It probably has a short rubber hose at the top where it fits on to the thru-hull fitting in the cockpit step. There's another short rubber hose that fits over a pipe on the sole plate leading to that hump over the centerboard slot. There's a small backing plate with what appears to be two bolts with nuts connected to it. what it really is is a U bolt for a single sheave which the pendant line rides through in a small pocket up in the keel slot. The hump in your picture is the outside of the pocket which contains the sheave up inside the centerboard slot. The sheave which is attached to a special U bolt assembly, was installed at the factory from under the keel with a long tool. If this was leaking, you would see it pretty easy.

Had the same problem in my 1980 O'Day 22. It took me awhile, but I finally realized that the leak was due to a small gap at the top of the centerboard pendant housing just before it entered the cockpit. Water was coming up the tube when sailing with the board down(especially close-hauled) but not at any other time.
