O'Day 19 - First sail and questions

We had a successful first sail on Sunday at Alamitos Bay in Long Beach. Not the most relaxing sail in the world as I was worried about the work on the standing rigging I did, but that all turned out fine. She points fairly well, does round up in a puff with the genoa, and is much more stable feeling than I anticipate. Lot's of comedy involving a short shaft two stroke and launching/retrieving the boat...

I did have one problem though, there are two drains in the cabin on either side of the aft portion of the center board box. These seemed to alternately take on water and drain water. I never had much below, less than a 1/2 gallon, but it makes a mess of the cabin floor. Are these suppose to have stoppers in them of some sort?

The small drains that are on either side of the centerboard box are what's in question. I seem to have some water in the bilge too (that I have no idea how to drain) and was assuming that came from these drains, but maybe not.

So here's my current thoughts on this. The "drains" only drain in to the hull and not through the CB box at all. This means I'm taking on water from either the through hull for the centerboard pendent or the cockpit drain - which to the best of my knowledge are the only through hulls on the boat.

I'd bet that your current thoughts are correct. Those limber holes, or 'drains' probably only lead into the bilge of your boat and not to a thru hull overboard.
You are probably taking on a small amount of water from somewhere. Check the usual suspects: center board fittings, mast step (if keel stepped), thru hulls, hull deck joint, etc.

Do you have a bilge pump, manual or electric? You should monitor how much water you are able to pump out of the bilge (inside hull) regularly.

The O'Day 19 uses shims to hold the center board pin up, so nothing through the hull except the line there. I'm becoming more and more confident it's the through hull for the cockpit drain that's the problem.

So I just wet vac'ed about 5 gallons out of the bilge, but we've had some rain and the cockpit drain has been out of cockpit (see attached picture) due to it being old and faulty. I also found the fiberglass surrounding this (again, cockpit side) to be cracked and had a previous attempted repair with silicon. I've ordered two new Forespar thru hulls and will be trying some epoxy to fix the cracked fiberglass around the drain in the cockpit.

With regards to the mysterious cabin sole "drains", I used a bore scope to verify they go nowhere but the bilge. I also snaked the scope down the tube for the CB line, but didn't see anything exciting. I may try and rig a garden hose up to it and see if the bilge takes on any water...

I also have the '19.When I got her she was filled with water.She had sat in a yard for 20 years pretty much neglected.When I picked her up the first thing I had to do was drill a half inch hole at the bottom of the transom just to the left of the rudder.Water must have drained for more than an hour.After much work and inspection I found that the cabin hatch leaked when it rained.My hatch is the one with two smoked plexiglass panels.[Some are one piece fiberglass.] I resealed these and have been bone dry since.Regarding the hole In the transom,I installed a screw- in drain plug but haven't needed it thus far.

Thanks Barry. I'll probably just need to float it and watch and see, but that's a huge, stressful, PIA when you're a trailer sailor! I did manage to score a free, brand new, 3.5HP Tohatsu Long Shaft from a friend though! Should keep the comedy of errors down after trying to launch with no rudder and a short shaft 2HP Evenrude. Good grief that almost ended badly!

Finally got the thru hull out (actual hull side) and there is no way in hell that thing would have been water tight. Little to no caulk and had evidence of leakage. New parts should be here tomorrow!

Bed the thru hull fittings in 3M 5200 sealant. Also remove the deck fittings, clean the surfaces, and bed the fittings with the 5200. One tube will do it all and you won't be guessing where the water is coming from. If you don't have a forward hatch on the deck, the cabin will be hot and stuffy. I made one that works great for my boat. The deck has a contour so an off the shelf one won't mate up unless you make a frame for it to sit on, and that is most of the work of building one.
I brought the same motor but the lack of a remote tank is unconvenient. I overfilled it once and the gas went insiode of the shroud. I didn't let it evaporate off before starting it, and it vaporised inside of the shroud and revved like mad. If the oil level is even slightly higher than the mark, the oil will get sucked into the carb at a wake and it will barely run until burned off.

I ended up bedding in the fittings with Life Caulk. The motor is more "NOS" (new old stock) as it's still a 2 stroke. I was hoping to test my handy work this past weekend, but the weather wouldn't allow it.

I bought my ODay 19 last spring and one of the first issues I resolved with help of this forum was perpetual water in the bilge. Turns out it was the cockpit drain. The short hose section which runs thru the bilge had partially deteriorated. I bought some new generic hose of right diameter and working thru the access hole with one hand as I recall made the replacement. Now she's dry. Welcome as another new/old 19 owner. Bill

Thanks! The hose looked fine, but who knows... I may not be able to test my work until after the new year, but I hope soon! I'm still a bit nervous with this boat as I'm more accustomed to 25+ and 15- and the fact that she's not self righting, but I think with some conservative sailing she'll be fine!
