Oday 17?

My wife came home yesterday from my daughter's dance class and said that one of the other mom wants to get rid of their ODay sailboat. The only details that she had at the time is that it was either a 17' or 19' ODay and needed some work. Not knowing much about the ODays, I was wondering if y'all could post some thoughts of this type of boat. All my current sailing is near coastal sailing. I already own a Hunter 23 and crew for two friends whom have a Norlin 34 and a Tartan 41. I'll be seeing the woman again in a few days but always have a hard time passing up a possible good deal. By the way, she's giving the boat away, i.e., the only cost I will have is whatever it takes to refurbish it. I realize my details are VERY sketchy. I do not yet know what the year of the boat is, what model it really is, or even what shape it is. I was thinking of just getting it to even just practice working on the boat. (I recently refurbished a 14' fiberglass dinghy and just can't seem to get enough of fiberglassing and epoxy. Any thoughts?

Joel - If the boat is either 17 or 19 feet there are at least four models it could be - Daysailor, Mariner, Rhodes, and 19/192. All are great little boats. At worst you can donate the hull for tax credit. AT best you'll have a great little daysailer. See if you can find out what it is and we can give you more info. Justin

Still trying to get more info about it

My wife sees the woman who owns it once a week but did the nasty trick of getting me interested in the boat but not getting any contact information. I won't be able to get any more info until next Tuesday (Feb. 25th). I'll let y'all know what I find out. (I just missed out on a Rhodes 19 a year ago. A friend's great aunt was giving it away since she hadn't put it in the water for about 5 years. I found out about it about 2 days too late.)

Could be an O'DAY 17

If this boat is an O'DAY and is either 17' or 19' long, it could be a Day Sailer (I, II, or III), an OD 17 (very rare), a Mariner, a Rhodes 19, an O'Day 19, or a 192. I doubt that she is a 192 from what you have said, that boat has a cabin with 4 bunks and if one is being given away...it would be gone VERY quick! My vote is that it is most likely either a Day Sailer or a R19. Check out http://www.daysailer.org for pics of Day Sailers, the Rhodes will look similar but larger, and the mast is stepped through the foredeck (or on the deck) while the DS has the mast stepped through (or on) the cuddy. The (rare) O'DAY 17 was basically a Day Sailer I without the cuddy, she was heavier and had more sail area. This design was sold mostly by George O'Day through his GEMICO company which he started after selling O'Day to Bangor Punta.
