That was our Friday weather I guess. Cold and rainy here in Ohio yesterday and today. With five more to come just like it. I am afraid there won't be too many more sailing days around here before they drain the lake. So its good that some of you are out there and willing to share. Thanx!!

Rob, I couldn't agree more! It was probably the nicest sailing day we had all year. I wish we had brought a camera, we had the same deep blue sky and crystal clear visability, cool temperatures (upper 60's to low 70's), steady breezes (5 to 12 kts). We left the marina about 11:00 and didn't come back in until sunset. There were 10-12 other boats out when we got to the the mouth of the Patapsco River in the Chesapeake. As the day progressed there were over 30 sailboats out sailing with us. By the time we got back to the marina we didn't want to go home. We order some pizza and beer and shared the evening with several of our slip neighbors. It will be hard to go back to work tomorrow.
Beautiful here on the Pontchartrain too.. Friday night and Staurday was great.. slept with the boat open.. Cool enough for light blankets.. Sunday the wind was a bit much (15-20) for Susan's inexperienced stomach, but it was a great day for walking the docks and talking to buddys around the marina. Our newest marina tenant is a young 4 foot alligator .. saw him several times cruising amongst the boats looking for turtles and fish.
Leaving tomorrow to help some friends move a houseboat down to the mouth of the Atchafalaya River..(Southbound on a little leg of the ICW that jogs up to Baton Rouge from Morgan City) We'll have a brisk tailwind and be going downstream in beautiful clear, cool weather.. .. My powerboat buddies don't like going 6 knots.. but to me it feels just about right! The bow wave comes up onto the front porch if we push any faster than that..

We have been getting in a lot of sailing lately, the winds are finally getting out of the Bahama High for us. I went out with a friend for his first time sailing his Venture 222. We all had a blast and he had it scooting through the water. He has been getting experience sailing on my boat, but there is nothing like the first time you have your own boat on a nice broad reach.

Also very nice on Lake Champlain on Saturday. The skies were mostly clear, and the leaves are turning in the mountains on both sides of the lake. Beautiful fall day. The wind and seas were building in the afternoon, and we had a bracing but fun sail as we moved our boat from our slip to another marina for haulout and winter storage. Alas, it was our last sail of the season, but a good one.

Perfect saturday afternoon sail on Barnegat Bay. Light winds and a relaxing close reach up the bay, then the winds clocking south and picking up a bit for another close reach back down the bay.
Very few power boats. Time to put on some music and crack a coke. Nothing to do but dodge the occasional crab pot and watch the birds.

Hey,
My wife and I were able to get out for a few hours Saturday afternoon. For the first time in a long time we left the kids at home. The weather was great - the wind was down after blowing HARD for a number of days and the seas weren't bad either.
Saw lots of sailboats out, very few stinkpots.
Had a great time and was home in time to make a nice dinner.

Bayfield Wisconsin also served up a fabulous weekend even though Friday was an inaspicious beginning with clouds, rain and chilly temps. Saturday dawned with cloudy skies that quickly cleared and stayed cerulean blue almost all day with only a few wispy clouds. Temps did not move out of the very low 50's but it was a great day for the local Applefest festivities which is why we did not sail on Saturday. Sunday dawned bright and clear and quickly warmed well into the 50's. After a fabulous breakfast ashore with some friends we took Emmanuel out and with very light breezes out of the west we beam reached slowly toward Bayfield enjoying the fabulous fall colors on shore. By the time we reached Bayfield the wind had freshened and gone slightly more west which gave us a rollicking good ride back to Pikes Bay Marina. The memories of weekends like this is what I will remember all winter long while Emmanuel slumbers ashore beneath her cover of winter snow waiting for spring so we can do it all again.

The Mac was already home since the last time I had been there the beginnings of that "Australia sized" island was already showing in the waters a few hundred yards away at our lake :cussing:
I've already marked the lines to replace on the little boat before next year, so I'll have little to do in setup for any of the next season since the Mac is still in fine shape (still wish I were sailing..).

Oldies ... you shoulda moved your boat!
Just as the water level got within a few inches of the point where I need to be lifted out, the water jumped up about 15 inches from last weeks storm. We're good for the rest of the season now!
Adirondack Bob, we drove over the top of Lake Champlain on Friday (past Rous Point) on our way to Stowe. I didn't want to get behind slow traffic by taking the southern route since it was raining all day. I've never seen rivers flooded like they were up in that area. With the currents we saw and the muddy water, you'd think we were looking at the Congo River! We went to Stowe for a wedding on Saturday and spent some time exploring Smugglers Notch, which was in the clouds in the morning. Anyway, the clouds never lifted over Mt. Mansfield, and we left on Sunday morning in pea soup fog. We never saw Mt. Mansfield for the weekend. We did drive over the top of Lake Champlain on Sunday morning again and saw some sailboats out in a pretty stiff wind, and cold, too!
We got home and late in the afternoon, just as the sun was setting, I set the spinnaker for a downhill run after motoring to the north end of the lake. With only a handful of boats on the lake, it was really nice making about 4 knots with just the headsail on flat water, with the lake in the shadow from the ridge behind me and the fall colors ablaze on the western facing ridges on the east side of the lake.
Just as the water level got within a few inches of the point where I need to be lifted out, the water jumped up about 15 inches from last weeks storm. We're good for the rest of the season now!

(That made it easy to avoid the shallow stuff!) And you're right about Sunday: it was blustery out there. We took the ferry across from Charlotte to Essex and it was a very bump ride.
Stowe's a great place for a wedding--or a honeymoon. That's where my wife and I spent part of our honeymoon (a LONG time ago!).

(That made it easy to avoid the shallow stuff!) And you're right about Sunday: it was blustery out there. We took the ferry across from Charlotte to Essex and it was a very bump ride.

Well Scott, you know I came pretty close to relocation to hopatcong a couple years ago. That was just before they left someone asleep at the switch and the fish in there were at the vending machines buying water bottles!. I'm guessing that the old folks at the state marina threw my reserve application away after I asked them silly questions like "do I need to buy a chain for the mooring? - where can I buy a mooring ball? - do I need to buy a dingy also?" . It was just as well since the knee replacement was NOT healing anything near to schedule and I wasnt nearly ready to climb in and out of the 21 the dozen times it would take to step the mast and rig for a season.
The second boat worked out OK even though the DMV(department of motorist vexing) took a dozen trips and nearly as many months to finally legalize my little boat and trailer. In the end, I just lied my @#!!ss off at a different town and in 15 minutes and $18. I had the trailer street legal. That'll fix me for trying to do things legal after buying from a charity!
I think I'll only be putting up with the resiviour situation for 9-10 more years, then I'll be somewhere south where the ocean doesn't drain except for tides. Then I can dodge hurricanes instead..
