Yeah, I hear you. But it is an easy way to connect with each other. Why not create an account just for the group? You do not have to use any personal information, or anything. You can call yourself anything you want, and use a new email address to create the account. That way, you can be part of the group without being 'discoverable' by the rest of the facebook world.

It's a trap! :yikes:
But seriously, does Facebook allow anonymous user names?

To be honest, I do not know what is possible. But creating a new account with a new name is certainly no problem.

I suppose one could get away with it, but check into Facebook's policy regarding user names.

While you can keep ALL of your info private, and you don't have ANY Facebook friends, pretty sure you have to use your real name. If thats too much for you, don't join. These FB boat groups are great, but mostly because people share. If you're not into that then the group is kinda meaningless.

Jackdaw is correct. It is all about creating a network, sharing information, tips and tricks, and hopefully, making friends along the way. I hope to meet up with some of the members as I cruise around in Scandinavia. So, for me, it is an ideal opportunity.
But I can understand if there are some who simply do not want to join due to big brother. Very understandable...

It's interesting that we went down the privacy route. Are people concerned about data privacy on FB? I assume I can limit the amount of information access I provide people on a FB account. The reason I'm not on FB is that between LinkedIn, NextDoor, TripAdvisor, SailboatOwners, OpenTable, and online activity at the office, I'm maxed out on social media!

Interesting discussion! No not Data Privacy per se, but more generally who can see what. Many people who are not on FB are not there because they choose to not share details of their life that way; even with their friends. Many just old-school, or myspace fans! ;^)

There are people that have FP accounts just to be specific groups, and only use it for that reason.

Some people are worried about data privacy, but thats a potential issue with ANY type of online activity. Have a Target card?

Everyone has the right to do as they feel. For years, I resisted FB, as I considered it a pointless and frivolous site, with nothing to offer me. What did I care who got married or whose dog did something cute?
But I was drawn in, and boy, am I glad I was.
I have had many opportunities through making contacts on FB. These are not just social but business, hobby and so on. I guess it does waste some time, but one can limit this. Stick to the useful groups, and ignore everything else.
