ocean voyage

I'm planning a short trip (4 - 6 hour sail I'm told) along the coast from one well protected bay to another. I'll anchor and spend the night and head back in the morning. I've heard of others making this same trip in small sailboats. I have a year of sailing experience under the belt so I'm still a rookie to say the least but I've been in some pretty good winds in protected waters. I go out in the ocean quite a bit in my 20 ft. power boat. I'm wondering if the standard rigging that comes with the 1993 26S will suffice. Is there anything in particular I should be looking for on the boat before venturing out into the ocean. the rigging is the only thing I can see that concerns me. When the boat gets to rocking I can almost hear it straining to hold the mast up. An extra battery and some extra fuel would probably be a good idea.

Check it out

You might check out the chat and responses on this forum under Gulf of Mexico Crossing in January. I think it'll address what you want to know.

Please tell me more

I am new Mac 26D owner here in the bay area. I'm very interested to know more about the trip you're planning and then how it goes. I'd like to make similar trips in the future.

more

-cs, I'm hoping to sail out of Bodega Bay. They have great launches there. I'll sail (and troll for salmon!) south and round Pt. Reyas . I will anchor in Drakes Bay, maybe do some hiking and fishing, crash and, if the weather looks good, grab the gps and set my waypoint for the Hawaian Islands! -Larry, could you post a link to that "Gulf of Mexico Crossing in January". I couldn't find it. I'm interested mostly in what to expect from the 26s out in the ocean swell so that I might prepare for it. I'm sure she'll act quite a bit different from my power boat.

I'd rethink Hawaii

If it's as rough all the time out of the bay like the one time I was there (we didn't leave the bay) it will definitly be sporty. Going to Hawaii is something completely different, I'd want a lot of experience and a blue water cruiser.

weather window

-GregS. I will try to grab a weekend when the swell is at 9 sec or more and the winds are like 5 - 10 mph. This friday actully looks good. Have you put in at Bodega yet? It was a beautiful opertunity last weekend but my boat is up at Clearlake collecting algae. By the way, I was joking about the Hawaii thing.

weather helm?

1) I'd want to know if you can motor out in the swells without the motor cavatating and burning up the water pump. (I have trouble in so fla with short duration waves). 2) if you hit bad weather, can you handle weather helm. (do you have modified rudder?) 3) fall back plan, vhf, cel phone, some sort of abandon ship bag, and raft, or floats. I'd be most concerned about being driven into a lee shore. a sea anchor, practice heaving to, etc. you'll probaly have a good window when you leave (or you'd cancel) its the return when unexpected weather could hit you... to answer your question, if the rig is tuned correctly and no frayed wires, the boat should be fine. imho........

Chad, The thread is down in the section of about 41-60 at this point. If you are not familiar with it, just scroll down to the bottom of the printed articles and look at the listings underlined below and click on them then scroll down through the next set of articles till you find that one. I don't know if there is a way for me to transfer the thread to you. Check 41-60 or it is possible that it may have moved farther down since there is a lot of forum activity right now.

San Fran Sail

I had a week of biz there early summer. I guy on another board took us out on his 34' catalina. It was quite windy, but a lot of fun. Winds roar a lot here too, but we don't have the cold water to deal with. He picked us up by the south beach club over by the Stadium. It was the highlight of my Summer.
