Hello Everyone
Is there any Vega Owner's that had crossed the Atlantic Ocean
to go to Scott land Or England. I love our boat 27 albin Vega 69
been in rough weather but not bad storms.I live in NovaScotia, so
you don't have far to go to get to land. I dream of all the ports
and place that I want to go to but I'm scared of not seeing land.
Only done one over night crossing. How does one prepare for a
crossing. Yvonne Murray

I have owned my vega avanti number 1020 for 7 years and live and cruise in Scotland, your boat will take you over the atlantic no problem as long as you time well and use trade winds , being scared is all part of being a good skipper, plan and go!!!!!!!!!! if you dont you will regret.

Hi Yvonne
The books "Log of the Mahina" by John Neal, and "Berserk" by David
Mercy, are both about voyages in Vegas. There may be others as well.
I think that "Out of the Blue" by Ann Miller is also about a voyage on
a Vega, but I'm not sure since I haven't found a copy yet. Perhaps
someone knows.
The American Vega Association has information about outfitting and
provisioning a Vega for off shore written by Nick and Jenny Coghlan,
who have made a circumnavigation in theirs. There is an account of
their voyage there, as well as that of Tony Skidmore, another
circumnavigatior.
In addition to Chuck and Laura's voyage a good number of other
long voyages have been, and are being, made in the Vega. You might
enjoy these sites.

Yvonne,

Outside of VEGA's you should check out (i.e. read) the series of books
by Lin & Larry Pardee. They circumnavigated in a 24 ft wooden
sailboat (SERRAFYN), without an engine and electronics that most
people think are so essential. The books provide a lot of information
also they (Lin & Larry) have written other books to prepare the way
for the offshore sailor "to-be".

Yvonne,

I dont know if this may comfort you but if you keep
on going east you will hit land, so you will not stay
there for ever.

The first crossing we did (from the Netherland to the
UK, hardly an ocean but still our first not seeing
land for 27 Hrs), the advice our "Consultant" gave us
was; "the UK is on the other side, if you keep that
bearing at some point you will hit it".

Get more and more experience, for that first crossing
I could not sleep for a week before (I have to admit
that every time I go out I am still very nervous,
until we leave the Harbour, then is just great), now,
we (me and my wife) enjoy more night sailing than day
ones, and I try to be as far from land as practically
possible (boats are more likely to sink near land, not
so much out at sea).

My belief is: All I ask is for guidance on the
landfall, the rest I can do my self.

I have been a lot more scared (rocks, overfalls,
sandbars, dropping tides, strong tides and those are
the ones I can come up with I am sure there are lots
other that I missed) near land than at any time far
from it.

Once you get past your fear of not seeing land, then
you can start thinking about the rest.

Cheers

Roger

Hi Yvonne, Out of the Blue was a good read. I'm not sure what happened to my copy. Gives a good reason for not going offshore with the stock cabin ports. One of hers was knocked out and the boat came close to sinking. She was able to do a temporay repair by cutting up her table. I just finished reading the book "Berserk" about an Albin Vega that
they took to Antarctica. One of the windows brook in on that trip
too. Don't know if they had shutters or not. According to the
story, they encountered waves higher than the top of the mast going
through Drakes passage. Quite a story. Gotta love this seaworthy
boat.

Aloha Yvonne, I see you've already received some good advice here and
you've been pointed to the AVA Web site for accounts of notable
voyages undertaken in Vegas. Let us just add that a great way to
prepare for your own voyage is to get out there on someone else's
boat. Laura and I both crossed the Pacific in other vessels before we
took Lealea across so we had a good idea of what to expect. More
importantly, perhaps, we had tested ourselves and knew that we really
wanted to do it in our own boat. Best of luck and if you need any
specific questions answered please feel free to email us at any time.
