27

There is an article in John Vigor's book, "Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere" on the Catalina 27. "But if you're a reasonably experienced sailor with a good deal of common sense, and are prepared to work to get the boat right, and study to make sure you're in the right places at the right seasons, there's no practical reason why you shouldn't sail an old Catalina 27 around the world, as others have before you."

Been to Nantucket

Hi David: The previous owner of my 76 Catalina 27 sailed it from Southern tip of New Jersey to Nantucket. If I remember correctly, the book entitlted "20 Small Sailboats . . ." suggests that the Catalina be upgraded in some respects. That book can be found at West Marine. Good Luck, Melody

Calif Cruising in a 27

My home port is in Stockton CA, about 75 miles from SF Bay. Been to Monterey (70 miles S of SF) and to Bodega Bay (60 miles N) many times. Seen wallowing calms on the Pacific, as well as 30-35 knot winds and 12-14 ft waves. All done with no particular problem. Now ruminating on taking my '74 OB, std. rig to Cabo San Lucas. This would be about 1200 miles from Stockton, all downwind. Boat would do the run back on a trailer. (An advantage to a smaller boat.) With the right equipment and "beefing up" (I've done about 90% of the upgrades Patrick Childress did on his 27 in circumnavigating), I wouldn't hesitate to take my 27 most anywhere that I could carry enough provisions to feed and water myself & crew.

C27 in the ocean

I sail my 27 in the ocean off southern New Jersey. We've sailed in everything from near calm to 30kts+. The boat handles most everything pretty well. Sometimes, going upwind against a steep chop will make the boat pound. I do keep an eye on the weather though, and I'm usually no more than a couple of hours from good inlets. As long as you know what you're doing, and the boat is in good shape, there's no reason not to sail the ocean with a 27. Randy

It can be done

As the others have mentioned, it CAN be done but would you WANT to? Coastal cruising is one thing but crossing oceans in a C27 would not be my idea of a good time. You have limited fuel and water capacity and practically no storage. Liveaboard space is, while large compared to "bluewater" 27 footers, cramped and wholely unsuited to passagemaking. So my advice would depend on where you were planning on taking it. Cruising the West coast to Mexico? Running the ICW & farting around the Caribbean? Go for it! Crossing the North Atlantic to Ireland? Look for another boat. LaDonna

Cat 27 on the Ocean

If you want to see the mods made by Patrick Childress have a look in "The Seaworthy Offshore Sailboat" by John Vigor ISBN 0-07-134328-8. The book is full of excellent guidance for the offshore sailor. "Think inverted."

1985 C27

I sail my 1985 C27 in the ocean off Long Island and southern Massuchusetts. I've been out in rough weather, and it handles surprisingly well.
