Obtaining a certificate of origin

Was wondering if anyone knows where to obtain a certificate of origin for a used boat? It seems this is required to cross the Canadian boarder when buying even a used boat from the USA (or at least saves some $). Not having much luck contacting Beneteau. Anyone familiar or has experience with this?

Certificate of Origin

Generally, the original Certificate of Origin is provided by the manufacturer to the initial buyer, who then submits it when registering or documenting the boat. You should be able to get a copy of the certificate from the manufacturer, if you pester then sufficiently. If USCG documented, you can try to get a copy from the Coast Guard Documentation Center (see web link). If state registered, the appropriate state agency (it varies greatly from state-to-state) should be contacted. Good luck! --Ron

Ron might be right but I think what you need

is a Certificate of Origin which is a customs document which documents the country of origin for a product being imported. I think it is usually required if the value is over $1,000. You can search around on the internet for the form and instructions but you probably need a freight forwarder or customs broker to help you. I would imagine you can find one in the yellow pages.

Origins

Hi Matt, Here's the site I use for shipping my company's software between US-Canada-Mexico. NAFTA is suppose to make thing easier and eliminate tariffs. I'm pretty sure Beneteau will have to supply the document. Call 1-800-USA-TRADE (in the US). They may be able to help or already have something from Beneteau on file. Good Luck. MArk
