what yall think about an oak sole? I know teak is king but its high $ .If i dry an laminate it should hold up some years right? I can stain it an only a trained eye would know. And i know that white oak has been used in boat building.
This is for a 1984 h27 any thoughts or commits will be appreciated.
Lee

Fir

I replaced my sole last winter with an exterior fir (cheap and same glue as marine plywood), stained and varnished with satain finish. 3 coats on bottom, and 9 coats on exposed surface. Hollie strips were 1/4" vinal striping from auto store. Looks great but I don't how many years this will last. Original sole was 25yrs old.

The oak flooring in my house has not stood up well at all to kids coming in from the pool with damp feet. It seems the water gets down between the boards and wreaks havoc. For this reason I would say no. There has been a lot of discussion and the plastics seem to have given a lot of folks great satisfaction. I would pay attention to the "slippery when wet" factor when making the choice.

Hey Lee, I replaced my sole (Both pieces) (84 h27) using teak and holly plywood. Paid $200 for 4X8 sheet and CAREFULLY cut myself using original as template. Bought at World Panel Prod in Windsor, NC. (http://www.worldpanel.com/products.asp) Replaced top step over engine at gangway with some of the remaining wood and still have a few feet for future projects. Tony

Would love to see some photos of your work. This seems a great option for the replacement.

I was recently looking at NuTeak at the Boston Boat Show the other day, and have also seen a product called PlasTeak that looks interesting. Anyone here used these?

Wondering if anyone here has used simple, stained luaun for interior bulkheads and the like? Thought it might be a very cheap, simple option compared to the textile, eroding wallpaper that's in our old boat right now.

Zipkruse, here are a few photos of the teak/holly plywood I used to replace sole in '84 h-27. The floors are 3 years old, although I refinished a few months ago. Tony

This is great. Thanks Lee for the question. I am considering changing the floors in my 87 Hunter 31. Have a couple of spots that are showing some age. Another question: Has anyone refinished their original flooring? Instead of tearing out the original. Mine is in real good shape accept as mentioned a few wear spots under the tabel. All answers welcomed. Thanks guys........

Tony,

That sole really does look great. I tried to cheap it out with some cabnet grade plywood that I varnished. It has lasted less than two seasons. Now I will have to replace it this winter. I can only hope I can do hald as good a job.

I was also thinkingn about using some of the PVC board they have now. Its a little bit less expensive than the Teak and Holly, but I dont think it would look that good.

I am also interested in how you finished it.
