Over Head Travler

Don't MUCK up a good boat. Instead get a Harkin small boat travler kit and a new 4 foot track. An overhead travler would only be more in the way and be very expensive to fabricate.

But where would you mount it?

I have an O'Day 23, and would very much like to have a traveller. Where would you mount it? I have no room on top of the cabin, as the whole thing is one big moveable hatch cover from side to side, and the tiller over the transom eliminates that idea.

Clarification?

Do you mean a "Hunter Arch", which spans their cockpit, or are you referring to a traveler over the sliding hatch? The former would be unworkable, as there is insufficient boom height. The latter has been proposed using a Harken traveller riser, but these are very pricey systems to buy. It might be possible to build your own riser and cross piece, than mount a standard traveler, but you are changing the physics by moving the mid boom sheeting forward. You would have to increase the purchase I suspect to compensate for the shortened arm. I believe I have seen a picture of this being done successfuly though. One drawback is that a dodger could not be added. Don

Travelers

Rich - As Don says, a Hunter style arch would be inpractical. I think it coud be done but it would cost you a lot of cockpit space and you still couldn't stand under it safely. Over the hatch is more debatable. The benefits of increased traveler throw are real, but it takes some engineering and you need to be careful when crash-jibing because it is possible to break the boom on a lighter boat with the traveler set wrong. I'd leave it. Justin - O'day Owners' Web
