your boat. We all love our boats, but in any love affair things aren't perfect. What is it about your boat that drives you crazy and you wish you could change. For me... 1. The stern lazerettes (hope I spelled that right) are very deep and have very, very small access ports. I'm a big guy 5'11" 220 lbs who spent a good part of my youth in athletics. I can't get my shoulders in the dang things let along work on/in them. 2. The MSD holding tank was placed under the swim platform in the back of the above lazerettes. I can't get to it to save my life and hate the thing because I'm scared to death of the day it fails!

What I Don't Like About My 25.5 Is......

....That they don't make them anymore!! Honey Bear, my 25.5, is in her 16th year of life and still in great shape but, if I ever wear it out, there would be nothing comparable to replace her with! She's fast; comfortable for a weekend or a week; very roomy for a 25~' boat; and looks like a real sailboat!! We sail on a good-sized inland lake and use her for club racing and family fun. The only things I can think of that I would like would be a queen-sized master cabin and a head with separate shower, but I suppose this is too much to ask for in a 25'7" boat! Hmmmmm...

That's a tough one cuz I just love my boat. Lessee....The icebox! I HATE the icebox on my C27. Uninsulated, impossible to get to the undersides without ripping out the galley, strangely shaped, out of reach. I HATE it! I use it for dry storage now and have a little electric icebox that converts to 12v. Anything else? Uhhhhh...the through hulls. I still have those scary gate valves which will be yanked on the next haulout. Hate those things. That's all I can think of for the moment. There are lots of things I want to change but very few that I hate. Just love that boat! LaDonna

H27 shoal draft means it won't point.

Yes, most cruising is reaching. Yes, the iron genny is often the right solution to work into the wind. But it just bugs me that a boat that is good or great on any other point of sail is so lousy to windward. David (Boat name withheld to avoid hurting her feelings.)

Catalina Iceboxes

My Catalina 25 also had an uninsulated icebox. It would hold ice for about 1 day if lucky during the summer. I too turned it into dry storage. Why does Catalina do these things??? For the size the 25 is a pretty good boat, I spent many weeks with a family of four on vacation on it, easier when the kids were small, but between the gate valves and no insulation ice boxes HOW CHEAP CAN YOU GET????? My O'Day is certainly not top of the line but their attention to detail is far better than Catalina and yet Catalina is still in business...go figure. Dave

What I Don't Like

LaDonna doesn't like her icebox or thru hulls. Well I've replaced my thru hulls and the icebox isn't really my problem but I hate the access to the Atomic 4 engine. Either I have to crawl into the quarter berth and work with one hand on the starboard side or empty the cockpit locker and climb down into it on the port side just to reach any part of the engine aft of the fly wheel cover. Bummer.

how about......

berths long enough to lay on your stomach. im sick of going aboard boats with six berths none of which fit me and i only need one. (i tend to single hand) im also tired of sit at the dock designs . how about a boat with a head that you can use when heeled over. or even a boat that has real shelves or storage or anything that you actually need when the thing is actually sailing. handhold maybe dare i say standing headroom im sorry but 5"10" is not standing head room . how hard would it be to go to 6'3" or so . especially at 27 feet or so . doent seem that it would ruin the lines all that much . seen any "new" boats that look pretty. didnt think so . but dont get me wrong i love sailing and wont bash that one bit!!(im on boat #6)

Catalina screws

I'm getting very weary of bulkheads, trim pieces, and hardware that are attached to fiberglass with self-tapping screws. All too often, after removing and replacing a screw, it will have stripped out the hole in the fiberglass and be impossible to tighten. I'm getting to the point where I'm afraid to remove a screw because the boat just gets looser and looser the more I work on it. But I really don't want to try and replace the thousands (?) of screws with bolts and nuts.

tiny engine "room"

The access to the back of the engine (trans, stuffing box, water heater and God knows what else) is impossible. It is just too small for an adult person to get into and out of. And the fact that you have to climb into the starboard sail locker remove an access panel, and then climb in.....yuck Why can't I "pop the cockpit sole" the way I "pop the hood" on my car?

Like least

My pet peeves; Fuel capacity too low, only 40 gallons, not enough for a Beneteau 40. The aft head is impossible to macerate from since the discharge thru-hull is way down in the bottom of that rounded transom. Not really in love with the under-deck furling drum, either; too many turns in the furling line induce too much friction. But the boat sails great. Just had a fabulous sail back from the Catalina Island Blues Festival with 16-22 knots on the beam in bright sun. The way it's supposed to be and worth all the fuss, expense, and bother of it all!
