I need to replace my muffler on my 1972 O/I 413. It has a Westerbeke 4-107. I'm assumeing it is also a 1972 model. The current muffler looks to be home made. Nothing in the catalogs even come close. The current muffler mixes the exhaust with the water at the muffler. All new muffler models have the water and the exhaust mixed before the muffler. If anyone has experianced this problem and fixed it I would certanily appreciate you sharing it with me. Thank You Richard

risers, mufflers, exhaust hoses can be tricky

Richard, I have a 1971 classic Morgan 38 with a 1988 Yanmar. We just got through an expensive learning curve that included having our engine ingest salt water and need a total rebuild and two subsequent less damaging water intake incidents. There is a direct correlation between the mixing elbow or riser, its height above the water line, the muffler, the exhaust water vented loop, and the length and height of the exhaust hose above the muffler. So, in reviewing your exhaust muffler question, let me urge you to do your homework on the entire system. I am out of town until after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and, for what its worth, can fill you in on my experience after I return. E mail me at setsail@ix.netcom.com Tom Hoppin

IRISH ROVER

My 1972 O/I 41 has a 1984 Westerbeke 70. The muffler is round, about the size of a 2 gallon bucket and sets under the drive shaft just aft of the transmission. However, the water and exhaust are mixed before entering the muffler. I am replacing this engine and have lots of spare parts.
