I have an Isomat Mast on my 1986 O Day 28 and have a rigger finishing the installation of a Schaefer 1100 Roller Furler. I have noticed that the halyard for the Roller Furler Foresail at the mast head comes off the sheave closer to the furler tube then I expected . Has anyone had a problem with my setup. If so what was the resolution

Furler

I have a Harken furler (doubt that the brand matters much). Whoever installed it had a solution to the halyard wrapping around the headstay. They ran the halyard through a padeye arrangement just below the top of the mast before running to the "car" on the furling. This created an angle between the halyard and the forstay when the headsail was hoisted to the top so that the halyard would not try to wrap. See crude (not to scale) drawing. Wierd solution, but it works

It is called a HALYARD RESTRAINER. Read the manual that came with your furler. It is required to provide the proper angle of the halyard to the top swivel (on all furlers I know of except for CDI internal halyard models and ProFurls which have a unique top swivel fitting).

Thank you! I am going to look at this option today and see how it would work on my boat. It does make sence because the Furler Manual calls for the halyard to be parallel to the furler tube and a greater angle (as you had shown) would be better. I believe that what I have is unacceptable according to the manual. When you say Pad Eye do you mean there is no block with sheave. There would be a lot of strain on this Pad Eye from the halyard tension.

I want to Single Handle and would really have my hands full with a Halyard Wrap.

Harken makes a nice one too

I installed one of Harken's halyard restrainers and it made all the difference in the world! I used to dread rolling up the headsail in a blow, fearing I'd wrap the halyard so tight it would jamb but after installing this, it's never been an issue. The first photo is a stock Photo from Harken, the second is mine after installation.

Thank You!
I had finally seen yours in the West Marine Book and after talking to my Rigger I told him that I need it to eliminate any worries about possible Halyard Wrapping on the Roller Furler or Top of the forestay. In my case the Halyard Restrainer is a must.

I would like to thank everyone for their input to help me through this question. The O Day Owners Forum is a Blessing and the people on it are truely dedicated to help their Fellow Boat Owners. Thank you All Again!:D:D

Re: Harken makes a nice one too

I had the same problem on my 32 last year. I used a piece of hose and electrical tape for a temporary fix. I just ordered the 944 Harken halyard restrainer.
