Drain hole in bottom of stern. Previous owner said leave open. When boat is in motion - it will drain? Comments?

Probably will, as long as you have some speed. My Bandit 15 had bailers in the bottom mid cockpit. If the boat was moving decently they would drain. Otherwise - not. Unfortunately there's a lot of time sailing that you are not going that fast. My question is can you easily reach the plug to close it when you're not going fast enough to drain? I glassed those bailers over for that very reason. It's really easy to make a hand held bailer.

Can't think of any reason not to put a removable plug in the hole from the outside - put in before putting in and take it out when you pulll it out? Don't know why they would design it with an ooen hole - looks like asking for trouble???

When I was a kid, we used to race a class called Mobjacks that didn't have any stern at all - totally open. But of course it was designed that way, as opposed to the question at hand. I would think that there wouldn't be much ingress of water should you do an experiment at the dock for a couple of minutes (or less!) to see what happens without the plug.

Merry Christmas, JOHNMADDEN, and Welcome.
Many boats have "cockpit scuppers" to drain water that finds its way aboard while sailing. (Also allow for spilled drinks to find their way out of the boat's cockpit.) If the opening in the cockpit is above the waterline there shouldn't be much water coming up through the hole. Some boats (including a stinkpot we own) have flaps on the outboard side of those scuppers so the water intake is limited even when the openings do dip below the water's surface. We sailed an Oday 19 for a short time, but I don't remember the location and orientation of the opening.

The opening is at the lowest point in the aft (rear) iof the boat. I was going to put it in the water for a few minutes setting on the trailer and then take out and see how much water I get before I change anything. Thx for the feed back.

O'Day Mariner 19 3444 Littleton, NH
The O'day mariner 19 had scuppers at the fore of the cockpit. The big complaint is that at 1/2" they clog allot. I'm going to drain into the CB trunk and get rid of the thru-hull fittings.
If you have a full boat load They also back flow a little on a heel.

Hey JohnM,

I am a new O'Day 19 owner, which is the 1982 model with the shorter 23' 6" mast. I am looking for a good used mainsail, any suggestions on where I might find one?
