I recently accuired my first sail boat. A 1978 hunter 25. I am eager to mahe her shine. The o/b that came with her is a 1983 Johnson 9.9 elect start. My question is what is the biggest size o/b motor I can use without being unsafe. the one on her now seems like it has seen it's best days. Thanks

Outboard motor size

I had the same question for our boat and I e-mailed Greg at Hunter and he said to check the rated size but to not go any heavier that what it was rated without beefing up the engine support. He said to be careful because the four strokes are alot heavier that the two strokes that they came with. I'd e-mail him and ask.

9.9 should do it

You won't get any faster speed than the hull speed (square root of waterline length x 1.347) and the 9.9 is perfect for you. I've got an old dog of an Evinrude for my dinghy, and the best part about it is that it's so ugly that no one will steal it. Consider yourself equally blessed.
