I'm looking for trailer sailor. The 22 looks great but P.S. review is not so good. No storage, TENDER and slow. I know you Heart yer O'days but tell the truth bro. Please. awaiting reply.
O' 22 sailing characteristics

I had one for 6 years and loved it. The 22 with masthead rig and shoal keel is loverly but frustrating. The little rascal does not like to be over canvassed. Anything beyond 15 degrees of heel and she will either round up or skid sideways. On the plus side these characteristics make for a very safe boat. It tracks well when sailed flat due to the extended length of the keel so the addition of an asymetric spinnaker adds a degree of fun for a smaller boat. Accomodations for 4 make it a fun overnight or weekend cruiser but due to its' size and space constraints anything longer should be limited to 2 persons. I crossed Lake Ontario in all sorts of weather several times with mine to spend a week at a time enjoying Canadian hospitality. At no time did I feel overwhelmed or unsure of the ability of the boat to deal with whatever weather I encountered. Is it particularly fast? No. Most boats will outsail it due to its' relatively heavy displacement. Yet it remains a comfortable and seaworthy pocket yacht. Best of all it won't break the bank.
I have had mine for about 6 years now as well and still enjoy it. I actually don't think she is all that heavy at 2083 displacement. Mine has the 600 lb shoal keel and no centerboard.
I do think she is fairly tender and will round up in a puff if I'm not on top of the main. Waves do push her around a bit so a day on San Francisco bay is a workout but fun! Flat water lakes in 10 knots of breeze with a genoa is a blast and she will sail to 8+ knots.
I have tracks for the jib/genoa lead blocks, mid boom sheeting and a short traveller on the cockpit sole that is surprisingly effective.
I keep the rail 2-3 inches from the water at about 25 deg. heel, balance sail and go!
Accommodations are cozy for 2 for a weekend but I think would be tight for 4 overnight.
Trailering, setup, and launching are fairly simple and I frequently do this solo.
I continue to make improvements and sail her as much as possible. Next project this winter will be Kiwigrip nonskid color matched to the topsides.
If the one you are looking at is in good sailable condition, as a lake sailer, I think you would be happy.
