While out of the water, I loosened the Hose clamp over the hose end that is over the main body of the stuffing box. The I slid the whole stuffing box forward, removed the packing nut and moved that forward. Then I slid the main body aft. That left the washer and some packing out of the opening of the main body. I refitted the main body into the hose and re-tightened the hose clamp. Then I just removed the packing, wiped out the inside of the main body with a dowel and cloth, and proceeded to repack. I tighten down on the packing nut hand tight and then about a half turn with the packing wrench. Then wire the nut to the main body so it won't back out from shaft rotation & vibration.
For packing I use 2 rings of Teflon impregnated Flax for the 1st and 3rd ring and put in thee Green Teflon putty as the middle ring. This provides a driples packing with no heating on the shaft.
